We Are Your Family Initiative Cares For Elderly Community Members In Mainland China

Shangri-La Group is committed to care for our communities and extend support to those in need, especially during difficult times such as during the spread of COVID-19. Among community members in need, elderly community members are increasingly vulnerable as 40 percent of Mainland China’s elderly population are empty-nesters or live alone, facing loneliness and lack of companionship every day.

To help the vulnerable elderly population in the communities in which we operate, Shangri-La properties in Mainland China launched the We Are Your Family initiative. In partnership with local sub-district offices or neighborhood committees, all properties in Mainland China identified three to five elderly community members to support and care for.

By January 2021, 42 properties organized 70 activities to deliver warmth and care to 133 elderly community members. Over 550 volunteer hours were spent visiting and chatting with elderly people, organizing exercises or playing games, spreading cheer during the holidays, helping by completing chores around the house, celebrating festivals and lending a helping hand to seniors who need help during city lockdowns.

On December 18, 2020, six volunteers from Kerry Hotel, Pudong Shanghai and volunteers from a local social work organization visited five elderly community members. Volunteers delivered “Meals for Love” prepared by hotel chefs and interacted with the community members.

On December 21, Shangri-La Hotel, Nanjing volunteers delivered homemade dumplings to three elderly community members and readied their homes for the New Year holiday.

Kerry Hotel, Beijing engaged with elderly members in the community by delivering flowers, organizing exercises and karaoke.

Shangri-La Hotel, Guilin visited various community members to lift spirits.

Midtown Shangri-La, Hangzhou organized weekly visits to three elderly community members. Colleagues delivered food and nutritious meals and chatted with the community members about their lives.

Shangri-La Hotel, Dalian prepared nutritious meals for an elderly community member who lives alone and cannot cook for herself. Hotel volunteers regularly deliver meals to the community member.

Volunteers from Shangri-La Hotel, Qinhuangdao visited three elderly community members to deliver food, gifts and well wishes.

Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou volunteers visited elderly veterans living in the community. Volunteers learned about their lives and delivered gifts for Lunar New Year.

Futian Shangri-La, Shenzhen volunteers visited elderly community members at Fuzhong Senior Community. The volunteers cleaned their rooms and kitchens, and prepared homemade snacks and decorated their homes with Lunar New Year décor.

Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou Yuanqu celebrated Lunar New Year with an elderly community member. Volunteers decorated the community member’s home with festive décor and played fun rounds of mahjong. Colleagues also repair glass windows, drying racks and cleaned her rooms.

Volunteers from Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai, Shangri-La Hotel, Tianjin and Shangri-La Hotel, Xiamen celebrated Laba Festival with elderly members of the communities. Volunteers spent quality time with the members, decorated their homes and created lifelong memories.

Hotels and colleagues throughout Mainland China will continue the initiative to ensure continued support and companionship for elderly in our communities.
