As part of Shangri-La Group’s mission, our colleagues strive to treat a stranger as one’s own. With this mission in mind, Shangri-La Group in China launched the We Are Your Family initiative to help and support elderly community members who live alone or desire companionship, and show them that they have a loving and caring family at Shangri-La.
In early 2021, Shangri-La Hotel, Dalian committed to supporting and spending quality time with three community members – Uncle Zhu, Aunty Li and Aunty Zhang – who rarely see others, especially during social limitations due the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shangri-La Hotel, Dalian colleagues from the engineering department visited Uncle Zhu to spend time with him and fix appliances and windows. The team fixed Uncle Zhu’s heater, which had exposed wires that posed safety risks, and replaced a missing window pane that was causing cold air to enter his home.
Shangri-La Hotel, Dalian was informed of Aunty Li, who lives alone and is required to cook all of her meals by herself. From January 6, hotel volunteers have delivered nutritious and warm meals to Aunty Li every day. Hotel volunteers also cleaned her home and decorated her home for Chinese New Year.
The hotel also helped Aunty Zhang, who stayed in the hotel during quarantine. Initially, Aunty Zhang did not open her door. After a colleague gained her trust, he was able to deliver nutritious and warming food to Aunty Zhang.
To celebrate Chinese New Year, colleagues gifted hand-woven scarves to elderly community members. The community members were pleasantly surprised, cheerfully wrapping their new scarves around their necks.
“We sincerely treat every empty nester with hearts filled with warmth, so that they will no longer feel lonely and that family affection will continue,” said Vincent Tian, the area general manager at Shangri-La Hotel, Dalian.
