Shangri-La Group Steps Up During Time Of Need

At Shangri-La Group, we care deeply about the communities in which we live and work. With ongoing challenges brought by COVID-19, we are proud to see our colleagues who have displayed acts of selflessness for our community members, hospital workers and more.

Shangri-La properties throughout China arranged outreach projects to help community members, the local workforce and medical staff. Since January 25, the culinary team at Shangri-La Hotel, Wuhan has prepared thousands of boxed meals per day for staff at Hankou Hospital.

On February 12, Shangri-La Hotel, Wuhan welcomed 236 medical workers from Jiangxi and Hebei provinces, who traveled to help the city during its time of need. The hotel team prepared for their arrival by implementing sanitary check in and operations and placing signs of encouragement throughout the hotel to ensure the dedicated workers had a comfortable place to rest.

“The hotel team members made great efforts to prepare for their arrival and provide daily service,” said Rina Shao, general manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Wuhan. “The team has ensured a comfortable and safe stay, especially the culinary team who developed a nourishing menu for their daily meals.”

During their stays, the hotel team went above and beyond to serve guests by offering hot meals upon return from medical shifts, and setting up a refill station where medical staff can help themselves to snacks and beverages.

On February 26, the Shangri-La Hotel, Wuhan team prepared a birthday cake for one of the medical workers.

“The medical workers were so touched to see the cake and staff singing birthday songs in the hotel lobby,” continued Shao. “It is important to recognize triumphs and celebrations, especially during these challenging times.”

During Lunar New Year, the management team at Kerry Hotel, Beijing delivered dumplings, rice cakes and more to medical workers at the Beijing Chaoyang Hospital.

“These are the groups of people that are dedicated and committed to keeping us safe in this fight,” said Jean-Marc Poli, general manager of Kerry Hotel, Beijing.

Many government professional are involved in the fight against COVID-19 and could not be with their families during Lunar New Year. To help spread holiday cheer during the difficult time, Kerry Hotel, Beijing General Manager Jean-Marc Poli and the hotel management team delivered dumplings, rice cakes and other traditional Lunar New Year treats to officers at the Public Security Bureau in Hujialuo.

“We wanted to show our appreciation for their hard work as well as spread a little festive warmth,” said Poli.

In March, Poli and Frank Hu, director of security at Kerry Hotel, Beijing, delivered nutritious beverages to government agencies including the Public City Bureau, fire station, traffic police station and district office.

Shangri-La Hotel, Chengdu set up a “Love Canteen” in its all day dining restaurant to provide nutritious meals to volunteers, city inspectors and police officers.

Since February 16, Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou has partnered with local charity organization Xiao Qing Xin Volunteer Team to prepare and donate over 2,000 meals every day to community workers in the Suzhou New District. Hotel colleagues volunteered their time to pack food after their daily work shifts.

Since February 12, Futian Shangri-La, Shenzhen has donated fresh vegetables and prepared meals daily to medical workers at the Shenzhen No. 3 Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

In partnership with the Shenzhen Hotel Association, Shangri-La Hotel, Shenzhen donated relief materials including sanitation supplies, bed linens and bath amenities to the city of Wuhan.

Knowing police officers have been on duty and working long hours, Jing An Shangri-La, West Shanghai colleagues delivered snacks and drinks to police officers.

The management team at Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai led volunteer efforts to donate and deliver masks and food to the Lujiazui Comprehensive Security Office, which will help community members on the front lines of the efforts.

When masks were sold out in Wenzhou, Shangri-La Hotel, Wenzhou donated 200 masks to families in need and delivered drinks with vitamin C and food to front-line staff.

Shangri-La Hotel, Harbin and Songbei Shangri-La, Harbin donated bread and other food to medical workers.

The management team at Shangri-La Hotel, Huhhot delivered bread and milk tea to front-line workers in the Guangming Road community.

Shangri-La Hotel, Guilin prepared and donated food to the Guilin Nanxishan Hospital.

Shangri-La Hotel, Nanjing delivered fresh fruit and vegetables to senior citizens at a local nursing home.

Shangri-La’s Sanya Resort & Spa, Hainan Island donated 130 bottles of juice to help nourish the medical team at a local hospital.

Shangri-La Hotel, Xian spread holiday cheer during the China Spring Festival by donating rice cakes to two hospitals.

Shangri-La Hotel, Ningbo donated 200 sets of toiletries and 100 sets of bed sheets to the Baizhang street community. The hotel also arranged transportation for 49 colleagues who lived outside of city limits and could not access their homes.

Colleagues from Shangri-La Hotel, Tangshan have volunteered throughout the city and donated personal items to help community members from low-income backgrounds.

During the week of March 4, colleagues from four Shangri-La and Jen by Shangri-La properties volunteered at Foodbank Singapore (FBS), which provides food and essential household products to low-income community members. The charity was hit by a sharp decline in volunteers due to the COVID-19 outbreak, which did not allow beneficiaries to receive food assistance.

Colleagues from Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore, Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa, Singapore, Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore and Hotel Jen Orchardgateway Singapore donated, sorted and prepared food care packs that are distributed to members of the community. The team sorted over 1,000 kilograms of food, and Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa, Singapore donated almost 50 kilograms of food including rice, instant noodles, instant oats and biscuits that helped fill 160 meals.

In partnership with local charitable organization Care Corner Singapore, Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore prepared 227 hygiene care packages for vulnerable senior citizens at the Senior Activity Care Centre in Toa Payoh. The care packages included hand sanitizer, surgical masks, vitamin C packs, oranges and a handwashing guide. Upon delivery, colleagues engaged with residents and taught good hygiene habits.

Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, Penang thanked the Royal Malaysian Police for their hard work with cold drinks and lunches at a nearby checkpoint. The resort team also prepared packed dinners for the night duty police officers.

“While the nation is on lockdown, the least we could do is provide these hardworking officers with a good meal,” said Elaine Yue, general manager of Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, Penang.

In Canada, Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver donated 30 blankets, 15 kilograms of amenities and other items to support women and children at the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre. The hotel has also distributed amenities to Clean the World, a global health organization committed to providing sustainable resources, programming and education focused on water, sanitation and hygiene for those affected by humanitarian or natural crises.
