Vulnerable communities around the world face food security. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) states that 925 million people in the world are undernourished. At the same time, food waste has become a strain on our environment, with an estimated 1.3 billion tons of food wasted globally each year. To help alleviate both issues, colleagues at JEN Singapore Orchardgateway by Shangri-La placed food deposit boxes in the hotel lobby for guests to deposit excess food. The team regularly organizes and delivers the food to The Food Bank Singapore, which rescues over 800,000 kilograms of food annually for its network of 360 beneficiary organizations.
The distributed food is vital for various food relief efforts including community pantries, emergency food ration deliveries and daily meal programs. The Food Bank Singapore helps alleviate food security for vulnerable community members at family service centers, charitable homes and shelters, soup kitchens, welfare organizations, schools and more.
“Our combined effort and contributions with guests made it possible for The Food Bank Singapore to serve individuals and families,” said Jeraldine Tan, director of operations at JEN Singapore Orchardgateway by Shangri-La.
