World Mental Health Day is observed annually on October 10 to raise awareness about mental health issues. This year, Shangri-La Group colleagues around the world encouraged good mental health among guests, colleagues and community members with educational lectures, stress relief activities, outreach, and more.
Hotel Jen Beijing hosted a relaxation event in Prototype in partnership with Bearapy, a social enterprise with the mission to promote mental well-being in the workplace community. Enoch Li, founder of Bearapy, discussed the importance of relaxation and taught exercises that relieve stress and anxiety.
Kerry Hotel, Beijing organized an art therapy session for 24 hotel colleagues. Led by He Linyi, a psychologist and counselor, the session encouraged colleagues to ease stress through drawing and coloring.
“Through this activity, colleagues explored their emotions, developed self-awareness, coped with stress, boosted self-esteem, and worked on their social skills,” said Wei Wei Saw, director of communications at Kerry Hotel, Beijing.
“It was a fun afternoon for everyone as it doesn’t matter if you are good at art,” said Kelly Chen, training manager at Kerry Hotel, Beijing. “We wanted to introduce this new form of relaxation and therapeutic technique to our colleagues, which can be carried out at home with their families.”
Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou hosted a stress awareness seminar for colleagues. A psychologist taught colleagues how to detect anxiety and shared tips on how to manage stress.
Over 380 colleagues at Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong participated in a mental health seminar, massages and physical activities to promote positive mental and physical health.
Shangri-La Hotel, Bengaluru hosted a painting activity in partnership with Concern India Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports disadvantaged citizens in India. The event encouraged children with intellectual disabilities to express their creativity and hone their fine motor skills through painting. After the activity, the hotel hosted a lunch prepared by the executive chef.
Traders Hotel, Kuala Lumpur hosted a cake shop in partnership with Depressed Cake Shop, a pop-up bakery that supports mental health. The shop sold baked goods including cakes, cookies, cupcakes, brownies, panna cotta and more. All proceeds from the sales were donated to the Malaysian Mental Health Association, a nonprofit organization formed by mental health professionals and community leaders from the University Hospital MMHA.
Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi colleagues took part in breathing exercises, meditating sessions and physical challenges to promote positive mental and physical health as well as team synergy in the office.
The housekeeping team at Traders Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi participated in a morning Zumba class to release stress, while the front office team enjoyed dark chocolate, which is known improve brain function and reduce stress levels. The kitchen team organized a dance activity to relieve stress in the workplace.
“The fun-filled dance was full of laughter, friendship and bonding in the kitchen,” said Jeevanand Raju, hygiene and environmental health and safety management system manager at Traders Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi. “The activity also encouraged comradery in the workplace.”
Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa, Maldives welcomed Dr. Aishath Ali Naaz, owner and consultant clinical psychologist of the Maldives Institute for Psychological Services, to lead an educational talk about stress management and substance abuse.
“At the end of the session, everybody learned that it is very important to take care of your mental health, secure your thoughts and always feed your mind with positivity, happiness and love,” said Jynkee Shaine D. Camacho, corporate social responsibility and sustainability manager at Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa, Maldives.
Shangri-La’s Boracay Resort & Spa, Philippines organized a health talk for colleagues. Conducted by the resort’s in-house doctor, Dr. Dianna Jean Padolina, the talk focused on the detection and treatment of work-related stress and anxiety.
