Shangri-La Group is committed to waste management and plastic reduction on a global scale. Starting in September 2019, Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney expanded its sustainability practices by being the first hotel in the city to introduce wooden key cards for all guests. The wooden key cards replace 52,000 plastic key cards that are thrown away each year. For Horizon Club guests, Just Water is available in the lounge and rooms, which will reduce the use of plastic bottles by 360,000 per year.
The wooden key cards are sourced from well-managed, plentiful, legally harvested and sustainable hardwood forests, with a grown-to-removal ratio of 2.4 to 1. Made from wood and bamboo, the key cards incorporate an RFID chip, laser-engraved logo and instructions, and are lightweight and durable.
Just Water’s carton is 100 percent recyclable, made with 82 percent renewable packaging. The shoulder of the package is plant-based plastic, and the cap is made mostly from sugarcane and 54 percent paper from responsibly harvested trees that contribute to 74 percent less harmful emissions, compared to standard plastic bottles. The cartons are filled with 100 percent spring water with naturally occurring mineral and pH content from Cottonwood Springs, located at the base of Mount Warrenheip, Victoria.

Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney has also introduced ORCA clean food waste recycling technology, which has diverted 39.73 tons of hotel food waste from landfill in the last six months, and avoided 34.96 tons of greenhouse gas, and 25.82 kg of methane gas.
Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney’s sustainable initiatives continue at the front desk with paperless check-in and check-out, and in back of house operations with DocuSign that replace internal paperwork.
