Every year on August 17, Indonesia observes its Independence Day. To commemorate the day, Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya organized programs to engage with and benefit members of the Indonesian community.
On August 15, Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya celebrated Indonesian Independence Day with a day of fun with students from the MI Nurul Huda 1 Menganti Gresik school, the hotel’s EMBRACE beneficiary since 2010.
Eight hotel colleagues and over 200 students participated in activities such as running in bakiak (traditional Indonesian wooden sandals), sack races, tug-of-war and more.
“Hopefully with this event, in addition to providing a happy experience for the students, we can further build a sense of pride for our homeland,” said Cahya Bhinkartika, service manager – CSR and sustainability at the hotel.
At the end of the day, the hotel gifted each student with new backpacks and school supplies.
“Today’s activities were very fun, especially because I won the sack race competition and got a school backpack as a gift,” said Indri, a student of MI Nurul Huda 1 Menganti Gresik.
On August 17, Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya organized a charity bazaar in collaboration with the Parents Association for Children with Down Syndrome (POTADS) and the Autism Awareness Advocacy Foundation (ASA). With the help of 20 hotel colleagues, the bazaar featured food, drinks and handicrafts made by seven children with Down syndrome and autism. All proceeds generated from the activity will be donated to victims of a recent earthquake on Halmahera Island.
“We want this wonderful moment of the Independence Day celebration to be spent wisely by helping our community members in need,” said Bhinartika. “We hope this kind of activity can foster a sense of national unity.”
Thank you to our colleagues in Surabaya for organizing the successful events.
