Shangri-La Properties Spring Forward By Celebrating Global Observations In March

Throughout the month of March, global citizens celebrated days dedicated to supporting the environment, conservation, local communities and colleagues. Check out how Shangri-La properties worldwide celebrated in their destinations.

On March 1, Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa, Maldives celebrated Employee Appreciation Day with a WAVE (We Appreciate and Value our Employees) ceremony. Organized by the kitchen and human resource departments, the event recognized colleagues from different departments who go above and beyond in their lines of work with certificates of appreciation. The event ended on a sweet note with a delicious cake prepared by the food and beverage team.

On March 18, Shangri-La’s Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka observed Spider Conservation Day with an awareness program at the resort’s Eco Centre. The program educated guests and staff members on the importance, threats, conservation status, lifecycles and morphology of spiders. With help from the Spider Conservation Unit Sri Lanka, the resort provided hands on experience with Poecilotheria Tarantulas, a species of tarantula that is native to Sri Lanka and India.

Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu organized a series of activities to celebrate Global Recycling Day. On March 18, the resort held a White Plate Action campaign, which encouraged colleagues to finish their meals during breakfast, lunch and dinner to reduce food waste.

On March 19, resort colleagues from multiple departments visited two recycling centers to learn about recycling.

“Colleagues learned about the various items that can be recycled, the process involved in recycling, and what new products these recycled items can be made into,” said Joyce Murang, CSR and sustainability service leader at the resort. “This visit allowed our colleagues to be more knowledgeable about what items have the potential to be recycled in their respective departments. This will help them re-think their ways of managing waste.”

On March 20, the resort donated recycling bins to Bantayan Inanam Primary School, the resort’s EMBRACE beneficiary, to encourage students and teachers to recycle.

“This is in line with the Global Recycling Day 2019 theme, ‘Recycling Into The Future,’ which focuses on the power of youth and education,” said Murang.

On March 20, the International Day of Happiness, Shangri-La Hotel, Ningbo’s resident manager, human resources department and food and beverage colleagues spread joy and smiles by preparing and delivering delicious lunches to members in the community.

Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta colleagues also helped spread cheer on International Day of Happiness with a visit to the nearby community of Scavenger at Gunung Balong, Lebak Bulus Jakarta. During the visit, colleagues distributed food and goods collected by the Emmanuel Food Rescue Foundation.

On March 21, Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai celebrated Mother’s Day (GCC) with gifts, sweets and flowers for colleagues who are mothers.

“Motherhood in the 21st century means living life on fast-forward, with few moments here and there to breathe and rest,” said Rushali Shetty, director of learning and development at Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai. “This is our small way of saying thank you.”
