Shangri-La Group Celebrates Lunar New Year With CSR

On the first new moon of every year, people around the world celebrate the Lunar New Year as a time to appreciate family and loved ones. Check out how Shangri-La, Kerry, Traders and Hotel Jen properties celebrated the special holiday.

Throughout the year, Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai welcomes members of the United Arab Emirates Down Syndrome Association (UAEDSA), the hotel’s EMBRACE beneficiary, to learn different trade skills on property. On February 4, the hotel welcomed adults with Down syndrome from UAEDSA for a special dim sum cooking class at Shang Palace to celebrate Lunar New Year. During the class, the chefs-for-the-day learned how to make two different types of dim sum dishes. Afterward, the chefs were awarded certificates of completion for their outstanding job.


On January 25, volunteers from Shangri-La Hotel, Ulaanbaatar celebrated the Lunar New Year tradition of paying respect to elders by visiting a local community with elderly residents. During the visit, volunteers spread well wishes for the Year of the Pig and gifted household items, cooking supplies and food to 23 residents.


Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore partnered with a local artist from Little Arts Academy, a non-profit organization that supports young Singaporean artists and creative programs, to create Singapore’s first digital hongbao for Lunar New Year. Through a smart phone application, guests can scan the special hongbao to see a digital message. The hotel will donate all proceeds of the sales to the Little Arts Academy.


Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Taipei collaborated with Ms. Ying His Liao, a famous artist in Taiwan, to create special Lunar New Year gifts for purchase in the hotel lobby. The gifts were inspired by the Chinese zodiac animals with creative touches, intended for symbols of prosperity and longevity during the festive season. The hotel donated five percent of each gift sale to SOS Children’s Village of Taiwan. The hotel sold a special Year of the Pig bookmark for NTD200 (about USD6.50) each. All proceeds of the bookmark sales will be donated to SOS Children’s Village of Taiwan, the hotel’s EMBRACE beneficiary.


Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul celebrated Lunar New Year with a special Wish Tree in the hotel lobby. Guests and colleagues were encouraged to purchase hongbao, write well wishes on them and hang the cards from the tree. All proceeds from the sales will go to Hope Foundation For Children With Cancer (KACUV), the hotel’s EMBRACE beneficiary.
