As part of Our People, one of the four pillars of Shangri-La’s Sustainability, we believe the hospitality workplace is an inclusive environment that should encourage people of all abilities to achieve their career goals. In 2018, Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu exemplified this ethos by partnering with Sabah Cheshire Home, a residence and support center for people with disabilities, to train and hire residents, providing them with careers in the organization. Since the partnership started, the resort has hired two residents as permanent employees in the Housekeeping Department and more as part-time employees. Starting in 2019, the resort will organize training sessions on the weekends to train students for the Housekeeping Department.
Beyond the Housekeeping Department, the resort has also hired two residents from Sabah Cheshire Home as baristas in Borneo Express, the resort’s takeaway café. Opened in July 2018, Borneo Express is run by three colleagues, all of whom are people with disabilities. The colleagues use menus with internationally-recognized icons and multiple languages to communicate with guests.
Since its opening, Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa has received two awards from the Sabah Ministry of Healthy & People’s Wellbeing and the Sabah Society for the Deaf for its outstanding work in supporting people with disabilities.
These initiatives support the Shangri-La Group’s goal for all hotels to employ people with disabilities amounting to 2% of the permanent headcount. Way to go, Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa!
