Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok Resort & Spa, Mauritius Hosts Artisan & Crafts Market

January 16, 2019

On November 28, Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok Resort & Spa, Mauritius hosted an Artisan & Crafts Market in collaboration with the Eastern Welfare Association for Disabled (EWAD), one of the resort’s EMBRACE beneficiaries. Ten students from ages eight to 16 and five teachers from EWAD contributed crafts including baskets, jewelry and embroidered pillows. The children made some of the items on site, showing off their skills and craftsmanship.

“We are very happy that our students had the opportunity to showcase their skills,” said Mrs. Rita, a teacher from EWAD. “The children are able to sell the products themselves, and I am sure this will encourage them to refine their skills. I hope more activities like this are organized in the future, where the children get to showcase their talents.”

The resort also sold material from CDL Knits, a textile factory that uses discarded products to make rugs, bags, sweaters, bed sheets and hats. CDL Knits supports women from low income backgrounds. Craftsman and expert basket weaver Jean-Marie from nearby Poste de Flacq village provided a helping hand throughout the event.

Over 100 guests attended and purchased items at the Artisans & Crafts Market. Proceeds of the event will go to support EWAD and CDL Knits.

Way to go, Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok Resort & Spa!
