Marine Stewardship Council Awards Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts and Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao for Ex

On November 14, Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) awarded Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts and Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao for their successful and creative sustainable seafood programs at the MSC Achievement & Future seminar.

Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts received the Leadership in Sustainable Seafood Award. The award recognizes the group’s sustainable sourcing strategy, commitment to protecting future seafood supplies, and initiatives to promote sustainable seafood consumption, including the MSC Seafood Promotion Program held in August 2018.

During the MSC Seafood Promotion Program, 19 hotels throughout China and Hong Kong created over 180 sustainable dishes, which were served in the hotels’ Chinese restaurants. In addition, 10 recipes were created for guests to cook sustainable seafood dishes at home. The promotion highlighted the MSC Seafood Chain of Custody certification (CoC) for the group’s 53 properties across Mainland China and Hong Kong. Shangri-La was the first hotel group in Asia to form a company-level partnership with the MSC.

“I am honored to give the Leadership in Sustainable Seafood Award to Shangri-La for their successful sustainable seafood promotion program in August,” said Patrick Caleo, the regional director of Asia Pacific for MSC. “MSC appreciates the efforts made by Shangri-La to drive sustainable seafood consumption in China.”

Along with the group award, Shangri-La Hotel, Qingdao received the MSC China Hotel of the Year Award for its creative efforts in serving MSC-certified seafood dishes.

“This partnership with MSC is part of our sustainability commitment,” said Gael Moureau, Shangri-La’s executive chef. “As a chef myself, I have been working closely with our chefs to help them create delicious and sustainable dishes for our customers without compromising taste and quality. We want to offer guests the best sustainable seafood from our culinary team while helping to raise public awareness on eating healthily and being more environmentally conscious about making sustainable food choices.”

Congratulations to everyone at Shangri-La who helped attain the awards. We look forward to serving sustainable seafood at our restaurants throughout China and around the world.
