Shangri-La hotels and resorts around the world understand not only the importance of education and literacy, but how fun reading can be! Check out how colleagues in Haikou and Nanchang are sharing the joy of reading with children in their communities.
On December 2, in partnership with the Kerry Group Kuok Foundation (KGKF), Shangri-La Hotel, Haikou and students from the Lianzhu Third Primary School, located in the Yunnan province, hosted a special reading event for guests. With an entry fee of two books per guest, over 100 attendees enjoyed tea and dessert while listening to children from the school tell personal stories about why reading is important to them.
“Some of the students gave such amazing performances that some people in the audience were moved to tears,” said Happy Wang, director of communications at Shangri-La Hotel, Haikou.
Prior to the event, the hotel held a book drive to collect books for the school. Guests and colleagues donated over 260 books in just one month, which will be donated to the school.
“These students are from low-income backgrounds, and quality reading material is sometimes in short supply,” said Wang. “This activity is aimed at not only helping students achieve their dreams of reading, but also encouraging the recycling and reusing of reading material.”
North of Haikou, colleagues from Shangri-La Hotel, Nanchang partnered with the Red Cross to donate over 100 books and 50 backpacks to the Xiushui Primary School on November 18.
“We are touched by the warm gesture from the Red Cross and Shangri-La Hotel, Nanchang,” said a representative from the school.
Congratulations to our colleagues in Haikou and Nanchang for helping children achieve their literacy goals!
