On November 4, Ride for Hope 3 cyclists crossed the finish line in Shanghai after 15 exciting days riding through 68 cities across Mainland China and Hong Kong. Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai welcomed the cyclists, and hosted a closing ceremony to celebrate the riders’ safe and successful journeys. During the ceremony, Shangri-La representatives presented the Ai You Foundation with a check for RMB5,689,029.49 (about USD826,485), which will help over 150 orphaned and financially disadvantaged children with developmental hip dislocation diseases.
The logistics and preparation for Ride for Hope 3 required several months of planning with the involvement of over 1,000 colleagues from 30 Shangri-La properties and associates from regional and corporate offices. Collectively, 32 core cyclists and over 5,000 local cyclists participated in the initiative. The cyclists rode an impressive 5,000 kilometers across four different routes.
“Ride for Hope 3 is truly an enterprise-wide community project,” said Oliver Bonke, president and chief operating officer of the Shangri-La Group. Bonke participated during the final two days of the ride from Hangzhou to Shanghai.
“Everyone got together for one common goal – to support this great cause,” said Xiaobing Liang, line cook at Shangri-La Hotel, Xiamen and cyclist in Ride for Hope 3. “It’s a meaningful and memorable activity, through which we had the opportunity to make a positive impact on children’s lives.”
“I didn’t hesitate to join the core rider team when I saw the recruitment message,” said Haigeng Zhu, Chinese kitchen supervisor at Shangri-La Hotel, Beihai. “Riding is my hobby and this event is a meaningful way for me to help these children in need and to promote the core values of our hotels.”
“It is very humbling to see Ride for Hope continue successfully after setting it up 5 years ago,” said Nicholas Smith, general manager of Kerry Hotel, Hong Kong and one of the core riders in Ride for Hope 3. “The fact that is has grown year on year is testament to the worthwhile cause we support through doing this.”
“We appreciate the innovative way of using bike riding to reach out to the public to help improve the lives of these children,” said Zhenzhen Luo, assistant secretary general of the Ai You Foundation. “It is heartwarming to see the close partnership with companies and the public to solve social problems together.”
Congratulations to all of the Shangri-La Group properties and colleagues involved in this meaningful program. We look forward to the success of Ride for Hope 4!
