Shangri-La and Hotel Jen Properties Celebrate International Coastal Cleanup Day

Every year on September 15, International Coastal Cleanup Day has been observed as one of the world’s largest annual preservation and protection events and volunteer efforts for oceans. Since its inception 30 years ago in 1986, the day has been recognized by the Ocean Conservancy and has grown from just a United States observation to a global cleanup event.

 

Activating the 2018 theme of “Harnessing the Power of People to Fight Ocean Trash,” check out how our colleagues around the world joined forces to preserve our oceans and beachfronts.

 

Colleagues from Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa, Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore, Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore, Hotel Jen Orchardgateway Singapore and the regional sales office joined forces to participate on International Coastal Cleanup Day. Over 150 colleagues traveled to a nearby beach to pick up litter and debris.

 

“Together, our colleagues exemplified this year’s motto – ‘Harnessing the Power of People to Fight Ocean Trash,’” said Roman Benjamin Puno, training and quality improvement manager at Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore.

 

“This is the highest turnout to date and we are delighted to see the happy smiles on everyone’s faces as they diligently removed trash from the coastal area,” said Tina Chia, communications manager at Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa, Singapore.

 

In Fiji, over 100 volunteers gathered at Cuvu Beach to participate in the special day. In partnership with Heritage in Young Hands Program, a local youth organization that encourages children to give back to their communities, volunteers from Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa, Yanuca Island and other local organizations collected over 662 kilograms of waste in just one hour.

 

“Everyone who took part in the project reflected on the amount of rubbish on the beach,” said Mereoni Mataika, CSR manager at the resort. “These types of events provide excellent opportunities for our colleagues to be positive role models to our youth. These opportunities also provide a platform for the resort to drive positive change in our community.”

 

For the fourth year in a row, colleagues from Shangri-La Hotel, Dalian and their family members celebrated International Coastal Cleanup Day by visiting the Dalian Natural Museum for a fun and educational session. After the museum visit, the volunteers participated in a beach cleanup in the Heishijiao beach area.

 

“The museum visit helped everyone understand the impact that humans have on the environment and its creatures,” said Cathleen Huo, assistant director of human resources at the hotel. “The session motivated everyone to be more environmentally responsible and take proactive sustainability actions. When it comes to improving our world, we make the difference!”

 

Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya partnered with its EMBRACE beneficiary, MI Nurul Huda 1 School, for a fun beach cleanup at Delegan Beach. Thirty-five hotel volunteers and 35 fourth graders from the school picked up plastic straws, bottles and food containers. After only 30 minutes, the group collected over 17 bags of waste. After the cleanup, local fisherman taught the students about the Delegan beachfront and threats to the environment. The day ended with a fun game prepared by hotel colleagues.

 

“Partnering with Shangri-La to clean the beach and help reduce the amount of garbage that goes into the ocean was fun and educational for our students,” said Siswanto, a teacher from the school.  “The activity will help our students be more conscientious the next time they visit the beach.”

 

Ten colleagues from Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul visited Kınalıada Island, one of only four of the nine Prince Islands that are open to the public, for a beach cleanup. After 45 minutes, the volunteers collected bottle caps, discarded clothes and shoes, and other waste.

 

“We had a very enjoyable day,” said Savaş İnceoğlu, one of the volunteers. “Kınalıada is very beautiful place and I feel very good to clean up this beautiful coast.”

 

On Hainan Island, colleagues from Shangri-La’s Sanya Resort & Spa participated in a local beach cleanup. Resort colleagues collected over five bags of plastic and ocean debris that weighed over 17 kilograms.

 

In Malaysia, 12 volunteers from Hotel Jen Penang visited a local beach to celebrate International Coastal Cleanup Day. After a few hours of cleaning, the team gathered 12 kilograms of waste.
