Successful events that support local CSR programs are music to our ears! In 2018, Jesselton Philharmonic Orchestra (JPO) renewed its commitment to provide free music lessons to 23 young musicians from Bantayan Inanam Primary School, which teaches underprivileged students in Sabah, and four other learning centers and schools in the area. In August, the young musicians took the stage during JPO’s Soiree by the South China Sea charity event to perform in front of an eager crowd. In partnership with Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu and the Sabah Tourism Board, the event raised RM38,000 (about USD9,135) for the outreach program.
Part of a four-day music festival, the charity concert brought together JPO’s seasoned classical musicians, the organization’s 70 members and more than 100 children from the outreach program to raise awareness of the important initiative.
“We hope to be able to get more funding for the outreach program after establishing more awareness through this concert,” said Jessica Lee, president of the Jesselton Philharmonic Orchestra.
JPO started its outreach program in 2012 by giving free violin lessons to children living in rural areas.
“Through this program, we hope to widen their horizons and offer them more opportunities outside their villages,” said Mr. Yap Ling, founder of JPO. “In return, we ask the exceptional pupils and their parents to give back to the society by considering working for JPO’s outreach program as paid teachers to new music pupils in rural towns.”
Funds raised during the event will go towards paying for the children’s music exam fees, music teachers’ fees, instruments, and to expanding the program to include students with special needs.
As the resort’s EMBRACE beneficiary, Shangri-La’s Le Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu is proud to support the school with special events, donations, volunteer projects, hosted medical services and more.
Thank you to JPO, the Sabah Tourism Board and Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu for helping these young musicians’ dreams come true.
