Shangri-La Properties Think Pink For Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Every October since 1985, Breast Cancer Awareness Month is organized to increase awareness of the disease and raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. Throughout the 2018 observation, Shangri-La hotels and resorts around the world celebrated Pink October with pink-themed awareness and fundraising initiatives.

 

On August 22, Kerry Hotel, Hong Kong kicked off Pink October early by sponsoring the annual Pink Desserts 2018. During the event, hotels and restaurants around the city showcase special pink-themed items to show their support for breast cancer awareness. Contributions from each sale will go to the Hong Kong Hereditary Breast Cancer Family Registry. Driven by Shangri-La Group Chairman Hui Kuok, the charity supports those in need of clinical care and funds research for preventative treatments.

 

Available until December 31, Kerry Hotel, Hong Kong’s pink-themed dessert, Rose Blush, was created by Executive Pastry Chef Julien Gourmelon. The hotel will donate 10 percent of the dessert sales to the Registry.

 

“It has been an honor to create Kerry Hotel, Hong Kong’s pink dessert for our inaugural year of the Pink Desserts 2018,” said Gourmelon. “Through this, we hope that the pink dessert Rose Blush raises funds for such an important and noteworthy cause within our society.”

 

 

Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong participated in Pink Desserts 2018 with its own charitable creation – the Blossom Pink Afternoon Tea. Available at the Lobby Lounge until end of October, a portion of the afternoon tea sale will go to the Hong Kong Hereditary Breast Cancer Family Registry.

 

Chef Patissier Alain Guilet at Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong created a special pink cake for Pink Desserts 2018. Available at Island Gourmet until October 31, 25 percent of the sales will go to the Registry.

 

In collaboration with Pink Caravan, Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi hosted many events to celebrate the month. The hotel held a beachside yoga session, fun raffle and prizes, all to raise money for Pink Caravan. The hotel also hosted a delicious Pink Afternoon Tea from October 8 to 14, and a Pink Brunch on October 13 in support of Pink Caravan. On October 12, colleagues and guests were invited for free health screenings to “Screen It and Beat It.”

 

In Malaysia, Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur offered a Pink Afternoon Tea at the Lobby Lounge and Pink Treats at Lemon Garden 2Go. Portions of both sales will go to the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia.

 

To support Our People and our guests, Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur hosted free breast examinations during the Pink Afternoon Tea and its annual Family & Friends Charity Walk 2018. Proceeds from the charity walk will be donated to the Breast Cancer Association Malaysia.

  

On October 5, Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney hosted a Pink Ribbon Ruby High Tea in support of the McGrath Foundation, which supports individuals and their families experiencing breast cancer.

 

Executive Pastry Chef Anna Polyviou prepared delightful sweet and savory pink treats, including a special Ruby RB1 chocolate by Callebaut, which were served at live stations throughout Blu Bar on 36. The tea was accompanied by free-flowing teapot cocktails and the city’s best view of Sydney Harbour.

 

“I’m super proud to be involved in such a worthy cause, and was honored to be MC on the day to help to raise funds for The McGrath Foundation,” said Polyviou. “My new ruby chocolate desserts are designed for the ‘pink’ theme of the month, and everyone enjoyed an epic afternoon of togetherness in support of breast cancer awareness.”

 

Tickets were priced at AUD125 (about USD89), and AUD50 (about USD36) of each ticket was donated to the foundation. The event raise over AUD9,000 (about USD6,363) for McGrath Foundation.

 

On October 27, Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu hosted a “Pink Room” for mothers and teachers from the Gilutungan Integrated School in Gilutungan Island, Cordova, Cebu. In partnership with iCanServe Foundation, Inc. of Cebu and with help from Dr. Frances Dela Serna, Cebu’s top surgeon, and Dr. Carmina Alferez, OB/GYN, the “Pink Room” provided free breast check-ups, consultations, pre-natal services and OB consultations to over 40 women. During the services, breast cancer survivors from iCanServe Foundation told inspiring cancer survivor stories and presented information about how to detect cancer.

 

 

In Muscat, Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa, Sultanate of Oman celebrated Pink October the entire month with a stunning pink-themed floral arrangement in the lobby.

 

On October 30, 50 colleagues from the resort and Shangri-La Al Husn Resort & Spa participated in the 15th annual Oman Cancer Association Walk-A-Thon. With the 2018 theme “I Care,” thousands of Omani residents and guests participated in the walk to support the association and people affected by breast cancer.

 

“Our colleagues were happy to attend the event as the month of October is dedicated to raise awareness for breast cancer, remember the victims of breast cancer and their families, and further support and assist in the rehabilitation of cancer survivors,” said Ece Muratoglu, social media manager of Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort & Spa, Sultanate of Oman. “Just as the theme suggest, we care!”
