Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa, Yanuca Island Donates 10,000-Liter Water Tank to Local School

September 6, 2018

Shangri-La hotels and resorts around the world like to empower our colleagues inside and outside the hotel walls. To engage resort colleagues in Fiji with the resort’s CSR activities, management at Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa, Yanuca Island asked resort staff to submit CSR project ideas for the year. Submissions ranged from community-facing projects to waste management improvements. The resort chose six projects to complete by the end of 2018.

“We have a very active staff volunteer program that allows our colleagues to contribute their time and skills to community development,” said Francis Lee, general manager at the resort. “In 2017 our colleagues carried out a total of over 3,000 volunteer hours in various projects representing close to 130 days of time spent volunteering. This year, we decided to challenge our team even further and asked them to submit proposals for projects that they thought would help the communities they lived in a meaningful way.

As part of the six project commitment, on July 26, Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa, Yanuca Island handed over a 10,000-liter water tank to Kulukulu Primary School, located in the Nadroga province. Led by the resort’s room division and in partnership with colleagues from the front office, housekeeping laundry and public area teams, the project was approved by resort management as a way to give back to Our Community. The school has 285 students and 10 teachers, but had just one water tank. The addition of the second water tank will ensure a steady water supply to the students and staff.

Resort colleagues, students and teachers at the school celebrated the water tank installation with cake prepared by the resort kitchen staff. Students showed their appreciation with traditional Fijian dances.

Congratulations to the team at Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa, Yanuca Island. We look forward to the remaining CSR projects that will be completed in 2018!
