On June 2, 2016, Shangri-La’s Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka opened its doors to guests on the southeast coast of Sri Lanka. To commemorate the resort’s two year anniversary, the resort celebrated with a series of CSR activities.
On June 1, the resort hosted an educational fair about endangered Asian elephants at its Eco Centre, during which guests and colleagues could learn more about the species from resort CSR colleagues. The exhibition included posters and booths with information about Asian elephants, including the difference between African and Asian elephants, the ancestry of elephants, the Great Elephant Gathering in Sri Lanka, the illegal ivory trade, habitat loss and the negative effects humans can have on elephants.
The posters also included information about the resort’s developing Sanctuary program, which will contribute to conservation efforts for Asian elephants in Sri Lanka. Within this project, the resort will help build bee box fencing around farming areas to keep Asian elephants away from the humanized areas. Elephants stay away from the sound of buzzing bees, so this will help contain the animals in safe areas to grow and prosper.
On June 2, the resort hosted a blood drive at the Dehigahalanda School, the resort’s EMBRACE partner, for colleagues and members of the community. After eight hours, 63 participants donated a total of 63 pints of blood, which was donated to a local blood bank prior to World Blood Donor Day on June 14.
On June 3, the resort’s stewarding department celebrated the resort’s second year of operation with a visit to the Meththa Nissarana Elderly Home in Hambantota. The team engaged with Our Community by cooking a delicious dinner for the elderly residents, and gifting clothes and food to the residents in need.
“The elders and caretakers were very thankful for the generosity,” said Palinda Perera, CSR manager at the resort. “The resort management team was pleased to see the initiative and kind heartedness of the stewarding team.”
Congratulations to the team at Shangri-La’s Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka for an exciting two years of operation!
Here’s to many more years of successful CSR projects.
