Shangri-La, Traders and Hotel Jen Properties Celebrate Abilities On World Down Syndrome Day

July 31, 2018

Every year on March 21, World Down Syndrome Day is observed to celebrate the abilities of people with Down syndrome. With the 2018 theme “What I Bring To My Community,” Shangri-La, Traders and Hotel Jen hotels participated by engaging with Our Community around the world. Take a look at how our hotels got involved.

On March 22, Shangri-La Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi and Traders Hotel, Qaryat Al Beri, Abu Dhabi welcomed over 60 children from Emirates Down Syndrome International and their families to the Shangri-La Plaza beach for a day of fun.

The children enjoyed an evening full of fun activities including a bouncy castle, face painting booths, cookie decorating stations, and Zumba dancing.

“Having been touched with the turnout of the event and as a token of appreciation to Shangri-La and Traders’ thoughtfulness, the founders of the Down Syndrome Association gifted us with certificates of honor for offering our support on this important day,” said Guntra Lipska, director of communications for both hotels.

In Indonesia, Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya celebrated World Down Syndrome Day in partnership with the Coordinating Council for Social Welfare Activities (BKKKS) on March 21. The hotel invited 202 children with Down syndrome from schools and foundations from Surabaya, Gresik, Jombang, Malang and Sidoarjo. Hotel colleagues happily hosted the children to a day of fun games, dancing, cake decorating, singing, and watching piano performances, a live magic show and a bubble show.

“This is the sixth year we have supported this activity,” said Jonathan Reynolds, general manager at the hotel. “Shangri-La Surabaya has participated since 2013, and we encourage all to join our activities and events to help raise awareness of what Down syndrome is, and how people with Down syndrome take part and play a vital role in our lives and communities.”

In partnership with Indonesia Child Welfare Foundation (YKAI), the hotel also hosted a team of doctors and psychologists who gave free health consultations for families with children with Down syndrome.

In Malaysia, Hotel Jen Penang celebrated World Down Syndrome Day with a Nyonya Craft Making Workshop in collaboration with the Special Children’s Centre, Penang (SCC) and local artist Kenny Loh. The hotel invited children from the center to embrace their abilities through arts and learn about the Penang Nyonya culture and food. During the activity, the children made refrigerator magnets in the shape of a special Nyonya dessert, the red tortoise cake.

Thank you to our colleagues around the world for celebrating the abilities in all of us.
