Famous writer Maggie Gallagher once said, “Of all the hard jobs around, one of the hardest is being a good teacher.” On January 20, Shangri-La’s Sanya Resort & Spa, Hainan put this sentiment into action when it partnered with the Jack Ma Foundation to recognize educators at the third annual Jack Ma Rural Teachers Award Ceremony. The resort was thrilled to welcome the winners for the third time as the ceremony’s official host.
On January 20, the resort welcomed over one hundred respected teachers and headmasters from different rural areas of China. The resort team worked hard to prepare for the special occasion: the housekeeping team worked until midnight the day before to arrange the rooms; the catering service delivered seasonal tropical fruits and desserts; and the recreation team and hotel mascot Loo Hoo prepared a special Hainanese performance to start the occasion with a jovial celebration. When the guests arrived at the resort, the concierge team and volunteers from around the country greeted them with sweet welcome drinks, garlands and welcoming smiles.
The 100 award-winning teachers came from 27 different provinces, cities and autonomous regions, including Yunnan, Sichuan, Guizhou, Tibet, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Shaanxi and Gansu. The resort was prepared to welcome the educators from far and wide, many of whom were visiting Hainan for the first time.
“The resort specially recruited volunteers from the same provinces, cities and autonomous regions as the teachers to communicate with them in dialects and introduce the hotel’s facilities,” said Michelle Zhang, director of communications at the resort. “The passion from the volunteers eliminated the teachers’ sense of distance and allowed them to feel right at home with Shangri-La’s signature hospitality.”
The next night, the resort hosted the award ceremony at its outdoor field. Jack Ma, founder of the Jack Ma Foundation, and celebrity guests led the teachers of honor down the red carpet as young singer Bai Ruoxi sang a special song written by renowned musician Gao Xiaosong specifically for the award ceremony.
The ceremony continued with a beautiful dinner of seafood, special Hainanese vegetables and seasonal island fruits. To make the teachers feel at home, some classic dishes from the teachers’ hometowns were also available.
As the Jack Ma Rural Teachers Award Ceremony drew to a close, resort staff joined the teachers in an outdoor campfire. The volunteers chatted, sang and danced with the teachers. With the campfire lighting up the coastal night, the resort team presented the teachers with local gifts.
The night ended with a spectacular fire show and delicious Laba congee to celebrate the end of the award ceremony as well as the upcoming Lunar New Year.
“We are very honored to be the official hotel partner of the Jack Ma Rural Teacher Initiative Award Ceremony for the third consecutive year,” said Rudolf Gimmi, general manager of the resort. “This event has great significance for me and the resort staff. Our staff treasure the experience every year.”
Congratulations to the team at Shangri-La’s Sanya Resort & Spa, Hainan on the successful event! We look forward to the next ceremony in 2019.
