Shangri-La’s Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka Celebrates World Animal Day With The Grand Opening Of Its Butterfly Garden

December 21, 2017

Every year on October 4, World Animal Day is celebrated to recognize and appreciate all animals – big or small, stationary or flying. To celebrate World Animal Day, Shangri-La’s Hambantota Golf Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka opened its Butterfly Garden. Once the butterflies hatch, the garden will host over 15 different types of butterflies that guests and colleagues will be able to admire.

Located next to reception, the project started in July 2017 when colleagues from the Golf Course Maintenance and Landscaping department designed the garden. With help from a botanist from the Dry Zone Botanical Garden in Mirijjawila, colleagues planted 67 different types of locally-sourced native Sri Lankan trees, vines, shrubs and flowers that butterflies like.

During the growth period, colleagues added natural compost and mulch to the garden, as well as butterfly larvae. Throughout the garden’s transformation, colleagues interested in gardening were encouraged to participate.

After three months, the resort celebrated the Butterfly Garden opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The resort plans to use the garden as a learning tool with its EMBRACE beneficiary, the Dehigahalanda School.

Thank you to our colleagues who helped make the Butterfly Garden possible. We look forward to seeing the butterflies that will add even more beauty to the resort.
