Hearing The World 2017: Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou Helps A Child Hear Again

Since 2015, Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou and Suzhou Jiayue Early Intervention Center have worked together through the hotel’s EMBRACE project Hearing The World to provide cochlear implant surgeries for underprivileged children in the center. On January 2, 2017, Wang Haibo underwent artificial cochlear implant operation through the Hearing The World program.

On February 23, his artificial cochlear implant was activated for the first time. Jobst Herr, executive assistant manager at Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou, and colleagues from the hotel were there to witness the magical moment.

“We all had tears in our eyes as we have accompanied him throughout the whole process,” said Herr. “It was a learning journey for all of us – from Wang Haibo not being able to hear anything to witnessing something so magical. With a little help from others, we were able to change someone’s life.”

“Although he is still quite young and needs some time to learn, the most important thing is that we changed his life,” said Juno, a colleague who witnessed Wang Haibo hear for the first time. “ We will never forget this magical moment.”

“We should all support those in need, as the smile generated from helping others is a lifetime memory,” said Herr.
