Mid-Autumn Festival originated in China as a celebration of autumn and a prosperous harvest season. Every year at Shangri-La, our hotels and colleagues use the time to give back to our communities. Here’s how some of our hotels are combining the joyous season with corporate social responsibility.
Since the Yuan Dynasty in year 1300, mooncakes have been baked and gifted during Mid-Autumn Festival. The pastries can be sweet or savory, and traditional fillings include red bean, lotus seed, and mixed fruit and nuts. Shangri-La hotels and resorts throughout China create special mooncakes and gift sets for guests and visitors to purchase during the festive season.
Guests who purchase mooncake gift boxes from China World Summit Wing, Beijing will contribute to the construction of school buildings for Beijing Dandelion School. For every gift box sold, the hotel will donate RMB1 to the non-profit school, which educates over 600 underprivileged students whose parents are migrant workers.
During the festive season in Hong Kong, Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong and Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong will give back to their EMBRACE beneficiary, the Heep Hong Society. Guests can purchase the Helping Children Shine – Moon Cake For Charity mooncake gift box from Kowloon Shangri-La and the Mooncake for Charity gift box from Island Shangri-La. All proceeds of the sales will go to Heep Hong Society’s Children Training Fund, which will benefit children with special needs. Order online from Kowloon Shangri-La here and from Island Shangri-La here.
Along with mooncake sales, Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong was hands-on during Mid-Autumn Festival at a fun baking event in partnership with the Ebenezer School & Home for visually impaired children. Guided by hotel chefs, Kowloon Shangri-La invited students from the school to bake “piggy cakes,” which are similar to mooncakes. The fun activity proved to be educational and beneficial, as students enjoyed creating the pastries while also improving their hand-eye coordination.
