Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Taipei Raises Awareness And Funds For The Endangered Taiwan Black Bear

June 11, 2017

Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Taipei is always concerned about the welfare of its guests, colleagues and surrounding community. Outside the hotel doors, there is an animal species that bears great importance to Taiwan and is in danger of losing its home. The Taiwan black bear, or the Formosan black bear, is currently on the endangered species list due to widespread hunting and loss of habitat. In May, Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Taipei committed to support the Taiwan Black Bear Conservation Association (TBBCA) and its efforts to raise awareness about the plight of the Formosan black bear and implement programs to help save the species from extinction. The hotel will host a series of activities to raise funds for programs aimed at saving the Taiwan black bear.

On May 10, the hotel held a media event to kick off charitable initiatives in partnership with Harper’s BAZAAR Taiwan, national celebrity and conservation ambassador Larisa Bukarova, and TBBCA. Announced at the event, the organizations and Bukarova teamed up for the “I Love The Black Bear” coloring contest, in which participants can purchase and submit coloring cards for NT$200 (about USD6.65) at the hotel. A panel of judges from the organizations will choose the winners and distribute prizes, including: the grand prize of a complimentary stay at Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa, Maldives; a complimentary stay at Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Taipei; a free one-year subscription to Harper’s BAZAAR magazine; and more. The proceeds of the coloring cards will go to TBBCA and its initiatives to save the Formosan black bear. For more information, please visit the hotel’s website.

Throughout June, the hotel will also sell its Taiwan Pineapple Cake with a Taiwan black bear plush toy. All net proceeds will be donated to the Taiwan Black Bear Conservation Association. Inspired by TBBCA founder Mei-xiu Huang, the doll is named “Xiu Xiu.” The Taiwan black bear toy and cake box are available for purchase at The Cake Room, the lobby and all guestrooms at NT$588 (about USD20) each. After June, the hotel will launch a limited-edition black bear in various uniforms that will represent each of the hotel’s departments.

Guests can also contribute to the cause by enjoying a special high tea in the hotel’s Marco Polo Lounge. Available until Tuesday, June 30, the “Heartwarming Afternoon Tea” features a series of themed delicacies including black bear cupcakes, hazelnut cakes and honey cheesecakes, priced from NT$880 (about USD30) per person.

Thank you to Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Taipei, Harper’s Bazaar Taiwan and TBBCA for contributing to a great cause that bears great importance in the country.
