Every year on the second Saturday of June, participants around the world celebrate Global Wellness Day and its mission “One day can change your whole life.” On this day, the objective to live better in mind, body and soul is achieved through five goals:
To recognize the value of our lives;
To pause and think, even if for just one day of the year;
To be free from stress of everyday city life and bad habits;
To make peace with ourselves;
And to raise awareness about living well and increase motivation, not just for today, but for the remaining 364 days of the year.
In keeping with these goals, Shangri-La, Kerry, and Hotel Jen hotels around the world will encourage colleagues, guests and members of the communities to embrace healthy lifestyles on Global Wellness Day. Here are just a few ways that Shangri-La will celebrate Global Wellness Day.
To recognize the value of our lives and the lives around us, colleagues at many Shangri-La hotels will partner with their respective EMBRACE beneficiaries and host activities that will get the heart pumping. Colleagues at Futian Shangri-La, Shenzhen will host a tennis class for the students at Dongying school, while colleagues at Shangri-La Hotel, Ningbo will teach a physical education class at Ling Fen Migrant Workers’ Children School. In Indonesia, Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta will embrace the importance of eating healthy by hosting a healthy cooking class and educational games for students from its local EMBRACE beneficiary.
To encourage participants to pause and think about living healthier and more thoughtful lives, Shangri-La Hotel, Baotou will host a free yoga class in a Mongolian yurt. The hotel will also build a mini garden in which guests can select organic vegetables, to be included in the guests’ dishes later that day. Other hotels in China, including Shangri-La Hotel, Guilin, Shangri-La Hotel, Hefei, Shangri-La Hotel, Manzhouli, Shangri-La Hotel, Qufu and Shangri-La Hotel, Shenzhen will host yoga and Tai Chi classes as well as Rooted in Nature activities to encourage thoughtful, healthy choices in guests’ everyday decisions.
Hotel Jen Hong Kong will spur thought and conversation with complimentary tea tastings and information about the origins of Chinese tea and culture. Similarly, Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta will showcase a pop-up Jamu stall where guests can try and learn the benefits of the Indonesian herbal drink. Hotels including Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu and Shangri-La at the Fort, Manila will focus on the importance of family with fun bonding activities and healthy meal options.
Many hotels around the world are planning activities for guests and colleagues to step away from the stresses of everyday city life. Shangri-La Hotel, Wuhan will host a cycling event around the East Lake Greenway, showcasing an alternative to vehicles in their daily lives. Stepping away from the hustle and bustle in Tokyo, guests can look forward to a mindful yoga session led by a lululemon ambassador, followed by fresh aloe vera and pineapple smoothies. Shangri-La Hotel, Singapore will also partner with lululemon and Om & Away for a tailored weekend staycation program, which will include meditation, yoga, wellness workshops and more. Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa, Maldives will take the benefits of yoga to the community when the resort partners with Yogasphere to lead a mindful session at a local school in Feydhoo.
Other hotels will encourage guests and colleagues to make peace with themselves during yoga sessions, tai chi, meditation classes and other mindful activities, including at Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu, Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok Resort & Spa, Mauritius, Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka, Edsa Shangri-La, Manila and more.
Kerry Sports in Beijing, Shanghai and Manila will team up for a multi-country Global Wellness Day celebration with morning terrace yoga sessions, family group exercise classes and the group’s first Kerry Sports Cup. Open to all guests and hotel colleagues, the biathlon tournament will take place simultaneously in all three Kerry Sports facilities, where participants will compete in a two-part challenge: a 1.5 kilometer swim and a 10 kilometer treadmill run. The winning facility will take home the team trophy, and members will receive awards for best individual times. Through the tournament, the staff hope to encourage teamwork and feelings of accomplishment, no matter the race times.
Many hotels and resorts around the world will celebrate Global Wellness Day by raising awareness about living well and increasing motivation through different methods that guests can apply to their lives beyond a vacation. In Thailand, Shangri-La Hotel, Bangkok will host complimentary Thai boxing classes, while instructors at Shangri-La Hotel, Chiang Mai will teach techniques for Thai herbal compress to help reduce stress at home. Shangri-La Hotel, Dubai will bring Global Wellness Day to the kitchen with a healthy cooking class as well as offering a pre-Iftar yoga class, which will focus on low-intensity training. Hotel Jen Manila will encourage guests to stay fit with a run around the Cultural Center of the Philippines, while Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur will demonstrate the benefits of essential oils with a product presentation.
