Commitment to CSR in the Philippines: Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu Builds for Better Education

February 26, 2017

At Shangri-La, we know some of the most impactful CSR projects result from long-term commitments. For almost eight years, Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu in the Philippines has committed to helping its Embrace beneficiary Tingo Elementary School, a small school in a rural community that educates underprivileged students. Since the partnership began, the resort has implemented useful initiatives including: cooking workshops for the school staff; constructing an e-learning center equipped with computers and supplies; and computer lessons taught by volunteer resort colleagues.

Throughout 2016, the resort focused on giving the students better learning facilities. In partnership with the University of San Carlos Community Extension Services and the University of San Carlos – School of Engineering, the resort raised and donated funds to build a two-classroom building for 60 sixth-grade students. In November 2016, resort colleagues were proud to attend the building’s ribbon cutting ceremony to welcome the students to their new classrooms, which were a vast improvement on the unsafe classrooms the students previously used.

“We are happy to have finally created a new learning hub for the school children of Tingo and to have played a part in helping them as they enrich themselves with knowledge and values, and as they inevitably reach their goals,” said René D. Egle, general manager at Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu.

Thank you to our colleagues at Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu, and partners at the universities for making a positive impact in these students’ lives. We look forward to the next successful project at Tingo Elementary School!
