Many say that seeing is believing. In Suzhou, our dedicated colleagues prove that hearing is believing. For the last two years, Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou and Suzhou Jiayue Early Intervention Center have worked together through the hotel’s EMBRACE project Hearing the World, which focuses on providing cochlear implant surgeries for underprivileged children in the center. In 2015 and 2016, the hotel helped raise funds to support two children with hearing disabilities in need of surgery and cochlear implants. With help from the hotel and generous donors, both children received their necessary surgeries and cochlear implants. Both can now hear the world without impediment.
The hotel has continued its Hearing the World project, raising funds through charitable programs and initiatives to help Wang Haibo, a four-year-old-boy from the Early Intervention Center. Wang Haibo has been at the center for six months and his age is the best time in development to receive the surgery.
Through the 2016 efforts, the hotel raised enough funds for Wang Haibo’s surgery – of which RMB128,218 (about USD18,637) was raised from the property’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony.
On January 2, 2017, Wang Haibo successfully underwent the artificial cochlear implant operation. He is now recovering from the surgery and the artificial cochlear implant will be turned on following successful rehabilitation.
“Once this step is complete, he will be able to hear the beautiful world that surrounds him,” said Jobst Herr, executive assistant manager at Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou.
We look forward to the day Wang Haibo hears the world around him. Listen in for more about Wang Haibo’s recovery!
