At Shangri-La, treating a stranger as our own is in our nature. Recently, Shangri-La’s Sanya Resort & Spa, Hainan had the opportunity to do just that. At the end of 2016, colleagues at the resort were informed of a family of four in need of heartfelt hospitality and a helping hand. Following the death of her husband, a single mother with no source of income struggled to support her two children. After hearing about the family’s situation, colleagues from Shangri-La’s Sanya Resort & Spa, Hainan leapt into action.
Colleagues visited the family’s small house, which had ragged furniture, worn walls, floors with bumps and holes, and exposed wires that posed safety risks. Following the visit, volunteers from the resort devised a plan to improve the safety and quality of the family’s living conditions.
To start, colleagues tiled floors, painted walls, repaired ceilings, reconstructed the roof and even installed a satellite dish.
The next step was all about furnishing. Volunteers delivered and set up two sofa beds, microwaves, fans, a television, tables and more.
After furnishing the house, colleagues made frequent deliveries with household necessities such as food and cleaning supplies.
Lastly, in cooperation with organizations in the community, resort colleagues built a small farm with a chicken coop and pig pen. The family can now grow vegetables and raise livestock for daily consumption and to sell in the community for a sustainable income. The hotel also funded the installation of solar panels to generate energy for the house. The energy that the solar panels generate is also a second means of income. The family can sell the remaining energy generated to the local state grid, which can bring in an additional RMB3,000 (about USD437) per month.
Following the installation of solar panels, the house was complete. The transformation from beginning to end is astounding, and it is all thanks to the generous colleagues at Shangri-La’s Sanya Resort & Spa, Hainan and the volunteers in the community.
Congratulations to our colleagues and the volunteers on Hainan Island for making a lasting positive impact on the family’s future.
