Through Shangri-La Sustainability, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts is committed to conserving the environment and reducing its carbon footprint as much as possible. Our resort – Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu – has long taken steps to make our planet a brighter and cleaner place for generations to come by implementing resource-saving programs to preserve energy and help our group reach its Sustainability goals.
All 492 guestrooms are handicap accessible.
Paperless check-in and check-out saves over 83,000 pieces of paper per year.
Each guestroom has a sensor-controlled air conditioning unit that shuts off once the guest’s desired temperature is reached, and automatically shuts off when the balcony sliding doors open.
The resort’s linen reuse program allows guests to choose if they would like to reuse their linen resulting in conserved energy and water. The program saves over 18,000 kilowatts of electricity per year.
The resort uses low-temperature laundry to wash linen. The practice saves over 4.5 million liters of water per year.
The resort participates in Linen for Life, a collaboration with Sealed Air and SK Bantayan, the resort’s EMBRACE beneficiary, to repurpose discarded linens into new and useful items.
The resort developed an on-site water bottling plant that purifies seawater through filtration stages, producing sparkling and still drinking water that is served throughout the resort.
The hotel’s in-room dining menu offers Rooted in Nature items, which include ingredients that are: sourced from local agricultural and fishing communities; chemical and pesticide-free; sourced from free-range livestock and poultry products; sustainably-sourced seafood caught through ethical means; or organic and fair trade products indicated by national and local food safety standards.
Like the guestrooms, the bathrooms also use the linen reuse program and low-temperature laundry services to save over 6 million liters of water total.
The water faucets use water restrictors for more evenly-dispersed water flow.
Since 2014, the resort has collaborated with Sealed Air Corporation through Soap for Hope to turn discarded soaps from guestrooms into new soap bars. The sanitized soap bars are then distributed to under-privileged communities, including the resort’s EMBRACE beneficiary, Sk Bantayan.
Bathroom towels and washcloths are repurposed into useful items and donated to underprivileged members in the community through Lines for Life.
Bathroom amenities including shampoo, conditioner and body wash are packaged in containers that use reduced paper and biodegradable materials.
