Shangri-La Hotel, Chiang Mai Presents Local Villages with a New School

At Shangri-La, we know that a positive and safe environment is paramount to a community’s success – especially at a school. On September 20, colleagues from Shangri-La Hotel, Chiang Mai proudly presented the newly-renovated Wat Lan Tong School to its students, teachers, administrators and community members. After months of renovations and an investment of BT743,170 (about USD21,263), students and teachers can now enjoy a new and improved cafeteria, classroom building with proper electrical wiring and a cooperative retail shop.

Located in Village 3 of Tambon Huay Tsai in the San Kampaeng district of Chiang Mai, the Wat Lan Tong School provides basic education for 144 underprivileged students from eight nearby villages. Before Shangri-La Hotel, Chiang Mai committed to helping the school, Wat Lan Ton School was in a state of disrepair and, in particular, had electrical wiring that was in disarray.

“The environment was not conducive to learning,” said Saranya Buntem, communications manager at Shangri-La Hotel, Chiang Mai. “As Our Community is a core pillar of Shangri-La Sustainability, we knew that investing time and funds into the school would be beneficial to the community and change students’ education opportunities in a positive way.”

Students from the school celebrated the opening with a traditional Thai dance.

“The warm atmosphere was made all the more festive by the children’s universal expressions of happiness,” said Buntem.

Colleagues from the hotel proudly presented the school to Opachat Ratanayanyong, Chiang Mai Primary Educational Area 1 deputy director, Chusak Niemton, director at Wat Lan Tong School, as well as teachers, students, parents and the village council.

Congratulations to the team at Shangri-La Hotel, Chiang Mai who made a positive impact in their community.
