Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka Recognizes Global Handwashing Day at a Local School

November 20, 2016

According to the Global Public-Private Partnership for Handwashing, every year 1.7 million children do not live to celebrate their fifth birthday due to intestinal distress and pneumonia. Handwashing with soap is among the most effective and inexpensive ways to prevent these diseases. This is why every year on October 15, organizations and companies around the world stress the importance of maintaining good hygiene on Global Handwashing Day. This year, Shangri-La’s Hambantota Resort & Spa, Sri Lanka partnered with Sealed Air Corp. to host a handwashing activity for students at Dehigahalanda School, the resort’s EMBRACE beneficiary.

On Global Handwashing Day, volunteers from Sealed Air Corp. and the resort visited the school to educate students on the importance of handwashing. During the activity, volunteers explained the importance of maintaining proper hygiene and demonstrated how to properly wash thands before and after eating, after playing outside and more.

Following this Global Handwashing Day activity, the resort has more activities planned to improve the school’s infrastructure, educational and health facilities.

“We hope to make a positive impact on the school and its students in the coming years,” said Sureshi Chandrasena, service leader CSR and sustainability at the resort.

Thank you to the volunteers from the resort and Sealed Air Corp. for helping make a difference at Dehigahalanda School.
