Every year, people throughout the Philippines recognize July as Nutrition Month to promote healthy and active lifestyles. Colleagues at Hotel Jen Manila celebrated a week of healthy eating in the colleague cafeteria and Maytubig Day Care Centre, and also extended their CSR commitment to the children throughout the summer.
Colleagues at Hotel Jen Manila enjoyed a different healthy lunch every day for a week prepared by the food and beverage team. Each day’s meal featured a different healthy ingredient with accompanying information cards to expand colleagues’ knowledge of nutritious ingredients.
“For example, we featured the health benefits of garlic on Monday,” said Roman Benjamin Puno, human resources manager at Hotel Jen Manila. “All the meals included garlic, namely garlic beef, garlic soup, vegetable stew in garlic sauce, garlic fish with tofu and more.”
The CSR team also planned activities to promote Nutrition Month, such as friendly basketball games, exercise classes and a health awareness seminar.
During the week’s celebration, the hotel launched the Teacher for a Day Program in which one colleague per day volunteered at the local Maytubig Day Care Centre. Different activities were planned with the children for each day, including creating nutrition-inspired costumes made out of recycled material, which the children presented to the class.
“Nutrition is a priority for us and the future of the next generation,” said Puno. “The smiles on our colleagues’ and the kids’ faces is enough to show that we are well and healthy!”

Rather than concluding the initiative after one week as was planned, the Teacher for a Day Program continued as colleagues volunteered at the center almost every day following. Colleagues can choose an educational subject for the day including shapes, colors, parts of the body, numbers, weather and more. Volunteers also participate in story time, handwriting, dance class and art classes.
“It’s great to spend time with the students,” said Ericka Calingasan, front office service associate at Hotel Jen Manila. “It makes us feel good knowing we are contributing to their positive development.”
