While the saying goes that there’s no “I” in “TEAM”, there’s also no “I” in “CSR”. That’s why in April, Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu partnered with businesses and members of its community to raise awareness for autism. On April 3, 135 riders completed a 61.2 kilometer bicycle course for the resort’s second annual charity bike ride.
Along with colleagues from the resort, four students from Sekolah Menengah Taman Ria Tuaran school joined in the ride. Marshals and volunteers from the Society of Amateur Radio Sabah (SARS) were on hand to provide support, and Tuaran Ford Ranger Club donated vehicles for riders to follow along the race. In addition, YY Bikes provided a bicycle technical team, Polis DiRaja Malaysia from Tuaran District and Kota Kinabalu provided traffic assistance, Hospital Tuaran and the Tuaran Welfare Department provided medical assistance and information for families.
“Autism is a disorder that is still unknown in the outskirts of Kota Kinabalu city,” said Tina Goh, director of communications at Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu. “With its close proximity to rural districts, the resort recognizes the opportunity to help spread information about autism.”
Following the race, the resort hosted a celebratory brunch and a family day in the Grand Ballroom with children from Sekolah Menengah Taman Ria Tuaran’s special-needs class and Pusat Pemulihan Dalam Komuniti Tuaran and their families. During the family day, Tapuk Tapuk, a local charitable organization, led a fun and educating sign-language workshop for the children and families.
The 2016 race followed the success of the resort’s first charity bicycle event, which hosted 180 riders on a 50 kilometer course in 2015.
“Due to the overwhelming success over the past two events, the planning committee is looking forward to another Rasa Ria Ride for Autism Awareness in April 2017,” said Goh.
