Hotels in Manila, the Maldives and Taiwan Keep CSR Pumping with Blood Donations

Many Shangri-La colleagues give it their all when delivering hospitality from the heart. Sometimes, those colleagues give a bit more to help those in need. Recently, three Shangri-La and Hotel Jen properties held blood drives to support their communities and beyond.

On May 2, Hotel Jen Manila partnered with the Philippine National Blood Center to organize a blood donation for its colleagues. Almost 50 hotel colleagues from different departments participated in the blood drive and received a complimentary health check from a Department of Health doctor.

“The Philippine National Blood Center officer was impressed with the hotel’s efforts and support,” said Brian Heredia, recruitment and blood officer at the Philippine National Blood Center.

In July, the hotel will partner the Philippine National Blood Center, the Philippine Kidney Center and Department of Health for National Cord Blood Awareness Month to support research that improves the yield of blood-forming stem cells from cord blood. Hotel Jen Manila also plans to host a quarterly blood donation and, in the future, partner with the local Lung Institute, Philippine Heart Center and more hospitals for similar initiatives.

West of the Philippines in the Maldives, Hotel Jen Malé Maldives hosted its second blood donation on May 9. In partnership with ADK Hospital, the hotel provided the donation venue while the hospital provided the technical supplies and medical team.

“This initiative translates the humanitarian, social role and duty of the hotel by helping those in need as well as hospitals that need the support of its community,” said Vathsala Subramaniam, general manager at the hotel. “As a community-focused hotel, Hotel Jen Malé Maldives always looks for ways to contribute to the community, and there’s no better way than being able to make a difference to something as vital as a blood donation.”

On June 14, Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan hosted a successful blood drive in partnership with Taiwan Blood Services Foundation for World Blood Donor Day. At 10 a.m., the hotel welcomed 187 colleagues, members of the community and students from National Cheng Kung University to the superhero-themed blood drive. By the end of the day, volunteers donated a total of 48,000 cubic centimeters of blood to the cause.

To extend its gratitude, the hotel offered meal vouchers to use at Café at Far Eastern or a 15 percent discount coupon for any of the hotel’s restaurants to each participant who donated blood and checked in to the hotel on his or her Facebook page.

Congratulations to the hotels on their successful blood donation initiatives.
