Earth Day Goes Global at Shangri-La

Every year on April 22, Earth Day is celebrated to honor the environment that we all share and to raise awareness to the threats it faces every day. From Hong Kong to Istanbul, Shangri-La hotels and resorts around the world have planned special activities and promotions to show our care for Mother Earth.

Cyclists in Hong Kong will get the chance to go green for Earth Day at Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong. From April 21 through Earth Day on April 22, guests can pedal the electricity-generating stationary bicycles set up in the lobby. When the bicycles are at full speed, LED lights will reveal an environmental message on the cycling station backdrop. Guests who take a photo with the message can post to Facebook or Instagram, including the hashtag #RideForGreenFuture, for a chance to win a sustainable seafood dinner for two at Lobster Bar and Grill.

Also in Hong Kong, guests dining at either Angelini, Café Kool or Shang Palace at Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong can enjoy delicious Rooted in Nature dishes that feature either sustainably-sourced or ethically-grown and –caught ingredients.

In Taipei, Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Taipei will unveil a new lunch menu at Lobby Court with a wide selection of local ingredients. From this menu, guests can choose to create their own sandwich or wrap paired with soup or smoothie for a healthy and delicious lunch.

Many of our hotels in China are joining in on the Earth Day fun. Shangri-La Hotel, Shenyang will offer a 15% discount to guests who empty their plates at all of its restaurants, thus reducing food waste. The hotel will also encourage guests to re-use their towels during the weekend stay if possible, and will host a tree planting activity in the community.

Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai will host a Dine in the Dark evening at Jade on 36 where guests can enjoy a three-course dinner in the dark while overlooking the glittering Bund. Through the special dinner, the hotel hopes to promote energy conservation.

In Shenzhen, guests who bring their own coffee mug to purchase coffee at Futian Shangri-La, Shenzhen will receive a 50% discount on their purchase. Through this promotion the hotel hopes to encourage waste reduction and consumption.

Throughout April, Shangri-La Hotel, Huhhot has invited children to participate in a “My Lovely Hometown” drawing competition leading up to Earth Day. The hotel placed a large whiteboard at Xin Café where children could draw what they love about their hometown. The competition will end in an online vote for the best drawing and the winner will receive a free buffet coupon. Through this activity, the hotel hopes to create awareness for Huhhot’s natural beauty as well as other guests’ hometowns.

Shangri-La resorts around the world are joining in the Earth Day fun, too. Shangri-La’s Mactan Resort & Spa, Cebu will celebrate Earth Day with a W.A.V.E. (Wonderful Acts of Valuing the Environment) Day. The day will include: a children’s hermit crab race on the beach and a rock-climbing challenge where the children will release the crabs into the wild; a Marine Debris 101 talk on the beach with one of the resort’s marine biologists; and a coral planting on the beach with colleagues and guests. To continue the spirit of Earth Day, on Monday, April 25, the resort will host an organic mini-farmer’s market followed by a Health and Wellness talk with a local health professional discussing healthy lifestyles and green cooking tips.

Our two resorts in Kota Kinabalu will engage their communities with environment-themed activities. Colleagues from Shangri-La’s Rasa Ria Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu will visit Sri Nangka High School to build a mushroom hut so the school will have fresh ingredients to include in daily lunches. Members of the community will join colleagues from Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu in a “gotong royong,” a Malay term for a group project that benefits the community. Volunteers will spend an afternoon at a beach cleanup along Tanjung Aru beach.

Shangri-La’s Rasa Sentosa Resort & Spa, Singapore will host a children’s activity titled “Let Your Creativity Run Free” on Earth Day. Here, the CSR Environment team at the resort will provide recycled water bottles, newspapers and other recycled material for a fun crafting session. The team will also discuss the importance of recycling and reusing products with the children and their parents.

Colleagues at our newest resort, Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok Resort & Spa, Mauritius, will organize a beach clean-up activity at Ilot Mangenie and Ilot Bourgault. The resort will also host a tree-planting ceremony in which guests can purchase trees for EUR 50 (about US $57), which will be planted around the resort property. All proceeds will go to the resort’s Sanctuary projects.

Lastly, Shangri-La Bosphorus, Istanbul’s Executive Pastry Chef Richard Vacher and his team will prepare a special dessert for Earth Day. The dessert will feature fondant sugar, chocolate and fruits to represent the delicious and natural ingredients that come straight from Mother Earth. The presentation will represent the earth’s aesthetic of soil, rocks and trees.

We look forward to celebrating Earth Day and the land we hold so dear at our hotels and resorts worldwide!
