Through the power of love and service, almost anything is possible – even helping a child hear again. In 2014, Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou supported Chen Siyi’s successful cochlear implant surgery. Following the initiative’s success, the hotel decided to expand the program to Li Wenyang, a six-year-old boy with impaired hearing from Heze, Shandong Province in China who lost the ability to hear after a life-threatening fever at four years old.
Throughout the hotel’s 2015 Hearing the World holiday charity campaign, Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou raised money to support Li’s cochlear implant surgery. On January 17, Li underwent surgery at the University of Suzhou-affiliated Children’s Hospital. Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou covered all expenses including the preoperative examination fee, operation, artificial cochlear and hospitalization costs.
The post-operative recovery lasted about one month following the surgery. After Li’s successful recovery, Jobst Herr, executive assistant manager at Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou, and the management team visited Li at the Jiayue Early Childhood Intervention Center to witness the cochlear system activation. After the hearing test and device adjustment, Li was able to hear clearly with a smile on his face. As his rehabilitation progresses, Li will be able to hear more clearly and, with practice, speak comfortably.
To continue helping children with hearing impairments throughout the Easter season, guests and colleagues can purchase and paint decorative eggs at the hotel for RMB 5 (about USD 75 cents). The eggs will be hung on an Easter tree in the hotel lobby as a reminder of the importance of year-round giving. The hotel’s fundraising goal is RMB 10,000 (about US $1,527), which the hotel will donate to its 2016 Hearing the World charity campaign fund.
Congratulations to the hotel for its successful efforts in helping Li regain the gift of hearing!
