Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong and Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong Serve Certifiably Sustainable Seafood

Many enjoy the taste of fresh seafood. At Shangri-La, we particularly like the taste of sustainably-caught and –farmed seafood! On February 22, Island Shangri-La, Hong Kong and Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong officially became the first two hotels in the city to achieve Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) Chain of Custody certifications. With these certifications, the hotels’ restaurant menus can include the MSC label to denote wild fish that comes from a certified sustainable source, and the ASC label to indicate sustainably-farmed seafood.

 

Spearheaded by the corporate executive chef and the executive chefs of both properties, the hotels pledged their commitment to support sustainable seafood with MSC and ASC eco-labels in September 2015. The hotels successfully achieved certification in January 2016 for select items and suppliers. The hotel restaurants now feature sustainable seafood options including cod, salmon, yellowfin, mussels, and crab, which are sourced from accredited fisheries and distributors.

 

 “This achievement reaffirms Shangri-La’s long-term commitment to promoting greater traceability of where our food sources come from by working with sustainable suppliers,” said Yui Ku, director of corporate social responsibility and sustainability at Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts. “It also provides an opportunity for our guests to recognize their responsibility towards environmental protection and commitment to sustainability.”

 

Shangri-La’s commitment toward sustainable seafood began with the removal of shark fin and endangered products from all restaurant menus starting in 2010. Six years later, Island Shangri-La and Kowloon Shangri-La’s commitment to more serving sustainably-sourced seafood is part of Shangri-La’s group-wide Rooted in Nature initiative that highlights locally- or ethically-sourced food. Their goal is to serve about 40 percent sustainably certified seafood by 2017.
