Recently, Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai achieved its fourth Guinness World Records™ title for most people tossing pizza dough with the help of members of the More than Aware organization. The hotel broke the record with the 511 participants including members of More than Aware, which promotes breast cancer awareness across Shanghai's local and expatriate populations, and further encourages women to play an active role in breast cancer prevention.
The hotel prepared for the challenge by setting up 65 tables in the Grand Ballroom and placing eight participants at each table. According to the rules, participants were required to stretch and toss the pizza dough in a "traditional" manner and continue to do so for a minimum of one minute.
At the end of the attempt, each portion of pizza dough had to measure at least 30.5 centimeters in diameter. The previous record was set on June 26, 2015 with 338 participants by Papa John's Ltd in London, UK.
"I am immensely proud of the efforts of our team here at Pudong Shangri-La and especially grateful for members of the Shanghai Cancer Recovery Club in setting a new Guinness World Record for Most People Tossing Pizza Dough," said Peter Clarke, general manager of Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai. “Hopefully this attempt will help raise awareness for cancer patients around China and around the world,” said Clarke.
After the record was achieved, hotel baked the pizza dough into individual Margherita pizzas. The pizzas were then sold at RMB 30 (about US $4.72) each in front of Gourmet. The pizza sales raised RMB 18,000 (almost US $2,850) for More than Aware. In addition to other Pink October outlet sales, the hotel raised a total of RMB 30,880 (about US $4,880), which will be donated to More than Aware to promote breast cancer awareness.
Prior to this record, the hotel had achieved the Guinness World Record titles for creating the world’s Longest Yule log cake in 2011; having the most people blowing out the candle simultaneously in support for Earth Hour in 2013; and having the most people having breakfast in bed in 2014.
Congratulations to Pudong Shangri-La, East Shanghai for setting yet another record!
