There’s an adage that says, “Waste not, want not.” Since 2004, Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney has practiced this principle by donating its extra food to OzHarvest, the first perishable food rescue organization in Australia. OzHarvest collects quality excess food from commercial outlets and delivers it, direct and free of charge, to 600 charities.
At almost every day’s end, Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney donates leftover food to the organization, which is then delivered to homeless shelters, youth clubs and domestic violence shelters. The donations usually include dry goods, bread, pastries and full meals.
Along with the daily donations, individual colleagues volunteer with the organization about once per month by fundraising, cooking, cleaning, food collecting and delivering, assisting at special events and more. In addition, the hotel participates in the organization’s annual “CEO cook-off,” in which colleagues from the hotel get paired with local celebrity chefs to create dishes that are then donated to feed over 2,000 people.
“Volunteering with OzHarvest was an incredible opportunity,” said Alice Salins, communications executive at Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney. “It was a real eye opener to see how much food they rescue around the city on a daily basis. After spending just a few short hours with the driver, we had collected over 1,500 kilograms of surplus food and I was happy to see that it all went to those in need that same day.”
Keep up the good work, Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney!
