On April 25, 2015, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck Nepal that caused devastation across the Himalayan nation. As of May 2015, the United Nations estimated over 5.5 million people were affected by the natural disaster. Showing their commitment to hospitality from the heart, Shangri-La colleagues around the world sprang into action to help aid the earthquake victims in Nepal.
Colleagues at Shangri-La Hotel, Beijing organized a charity sale to raise money for earthquake victims. With the help of generous colleagues and guests, the hotel raised over RMB 24,880 (over US $6,600) in just two hours.
Colleagues at Golden Flower Hotel, Xian also organized a charity sale in its community. Colleagues sold kitchen supplies, games, clothes and more to guests, fellow colleagues and members of the community. The food & beverage team contributed to the event by baking and selling pieces of a 22-meter cake. Altogether, the hotel raised RMB 9,563 (about US $2,535) for the Nepal earthquake relief.
The food & beverage team at Shangri-La Hotel, Tianjin baked and sold cupcakes to colleagues, which raised RMB 9,973 (about US $2,645) for earthquake victims.
Through charity sales and donations, colleagues at Shangri-La Hotel, Huhhot collected RMB 11,000 (about US $2,918) to support those affected by the earthquake.
Colleagues at Jing An Shangri-La, West Shanghai completed several initiatives to help raise money for earthquake victims. On May 13 and 14, hotel management served guests at Café Liang’s Grab-and-Go counter. All RMB 11,640 (about US $3,087) proceeds of their hourly work went to the Nepal Earthquake Relief fund. Collectively, hotel colleagues donated RMB 4,360 (about US $1,156) out of their own pockets. Also, the hotel offered guests a special room package for RMB 3,000 (about US $483) each, in which all proceeds went directly to the Nepal Earthquake Relief fund. In total, Jing An Shangri-La, West Shanghai raised over RMB 20,000 (about US $8,222).
Also in Shanghai, hotel colleagues at Kerry Hotel Pudong, Shanghai organized a charity run around Centry Park to raise donations for the relief efforts in Nepal. The charity run raised RMB 20,400 (about US $5,411).
In Malaysia, Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpur hosted a Vertical Run up its building to raise money for victims of the earthquake. Through this initiative and other fundraising efforts, the hotel raised over RMB 20,000 (about US $5,305) for earthquake victims.
As a group, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts held a Golden Circle Award Points Donation drive, in which for every 1,000 Golden Circle Award Points donated, Shangri-La donated US $40 to Oxfam Hong Kong.
