A Walk in the Woods to Help Children in Need

Since 2005, a century-old German festival celebrating the cabbage harvest was brought to the city of Changchun to bring people together and benefit the community. While the cabbage might be a humble vegetable, in Changchun it has become a powerful force for good in the community.

Each year since the initial launch, the team at Shangri-La Hotel, Changchun has organized a Charity Cabbage Walk through the surrounding countryside of Moon Lake and Bei Hu Park to raise money for poverty alleviation projects. Inspired by the German tradition of the cabbage walk, which celebrates the harvest and culminates in a cabbage dinner, Shangri-La Hotel, Changchun has invited hotel staff and local community members to explore the nearby countryside, enjoy a cabbage dinner and raise money for charity.

Over the 11 years the walk has been held, thousands of people of different nationalities have joined together in the Changchun cabbage walk to raise money for the local community. This year, about 300 people joined the walk on March 14, 2015 to raise funds for the local Xinjia School. The route of the walk took participants through the countryside near Lotus Mountain, visiting small villages along the way. The walkers’ strength was kept up by coffee and tea and sweet potato congee served by the hotel’s banquet team.

At the day’s end, the 11th Charity Cabbage Walk Celebration Dinner of cabbage and sausages was held in the hotel ballroom. During the dinner, an auction of arts and crafts by the students of Xinjia School, room vouchers for Shangri-La hotel stays throughout China, and a selection of fine jewelry and artworks raised further funds to improve the school’s facilities.

“We are very happy to be part of this meaningful event, to join the walk, breathe the fresh air, enjoy the beautiful scenery of the countryside and at the same time help the students in Xinjia School, “ said Olina Wen, communications executive of the hotel.

Thank you to all who joined this year’s walk and celebration dinner! We hope to see everyone next year for the Twelfth Charity Cabbage Walk!
