Recently, Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou helped one little girl receive one of the greatest gifts of all: the ability to hear. Chen Siyi, a seven-year-old girl from Yancheng, Jiangsu, was a child with hearing-impairments who underwent three years of ongoing rehabilitation training at Jiayue Early Childhood Intervention Center (Jiayue). Unfortunately, the rehabilitation did not improve Siyi’s hearing, and her family was unable to pay for an artificial cochlear implant surgery.
After thoughtful consideration, Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou decided to sponsor Siyi’s cochlear implant surgery, a first for the hotel, and help realize her dream of hearing the world. Through Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou’s fundraising initiative “Hearing the World,” the hotel paid for all operation costs, including that of the artificial cochlear, examination fees and hospitalization costs.
The cochlear implant surgery was completed at the University of Suzhou affiliated Children’s Hospital in January 2015. In February 2015, after nearly a month of postoperative recovery, Michael Tam, general manager of Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou, and others went to Jiayue to witness the success of Siyi’s surgery.
According to those who were present, everyone cheered on the spot when Siyi said, “I can hear!” Siyi’s mother was too thrilled to speak.
"This campaign is truly worthwhile and the support received from our partners is overwhelming,” said Michael Tam. “All the hard work was paid off when you saw the big smile on Siyi's face the first time when the implant was switched on!"
After a period of training and adjustment, Siyi was able to listen and speak like children without hearing impairments, according to those who facilitated Siyi’s hearing tests.
Siyi is the first beneficiary of Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou’s “Hearing The World” campaign, marking the campaign’s first success after its launch in November 2014.
The hotel looks forward to helping more children with hearing impairments from underprivileged families. We can’t wait to hear all about it! Great job, Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou!
