Brighter Smiles for a Brighter Future

January 20, 2015

Since 2012, Shangri-La Hotel, Ningbo has committed to assisting the Siming Mountain Primary School, located in the mountainous county of Yuyao, China. Throughout the years, the hotel has provided four freshly-cooked meals every week to ensure proper nutrition, has volunteered to fix a 20-meter (about 65-foot) hand washing station to encourage proper hygiene, has repaired major aspects of the school’s canteen to ensure food safety, and has taught English classes to increase fluency across the school.

During these improvements and additions, the team at Shangri-La Hotel, Ningbo found that many of the children were troubled by dental problems.

To help brighten the children’s smiles, the hotel reached out to the dental clinic of Ningbo University Hospital, which was happy to support the initiative. Four dental specialists and Shangri-La colleagues visited Siming Mountain Primary School to carry out examinations and teach students the importance of dental care.

During just one visit, 220 children received check-ups and dental advice. According to Eileen Le, quality improvement manager at Shangri-La Hotel, Ningbo, 95 percent of the children had dental problems.

“We were shocked by this result and also worry about their future,” said Le. “Although the event is over, we also need to take care of their physical health and growth for their bright future. . . We still have a long way to go.”

Through the success of this activity, the dental clinic of Ningbo University Hospital has become one of the hotel’s long-term partners for future CSR projects. While the children currently smile bright, we look forward to helping them maintain healthy smiles for years to come.
