On October 15, Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta celebrated Global Handwashing Day by volunteering at its Embrace beneficiary, SMPN 181 Jakarta, a public junior high school in nearby Bendungan Hilir, South Jakarta. Colleagues volunteered their Wednesday afternoon to educate 200 students on the importance of hand washing and hygiene.
“Our involvement in the Global Handwashing Day is in conjunction with our CSR focus, which is concerned with education and health issues," said Jürgen Dörr, general manager at Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta. "We hope that our attempt will help the students to have a better understanding about healthy living.”
Built in 1976, the school suffers from insufficient classroom, toilet, canteen, garden and school yard facilities. Almost all of its students come from underprivileged families with unemployed parents. Through Embrace, Shangri-La’s Care for People Project, Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta, has planned continuous activities for the long-term improvement of the school and its students.
Following Global Handwashing Day, Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta plans regular activities to improve the school’s infrastructure, such as a cleaning day, a classroom make-over, repainting the building, a canteen renovation, a school yard renovation and a fogging treatment. Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta hopes to continue to make a positive impact at the school for years to come!
