At Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts, we try to work with the communities around us to not only be part of their communities, but also to make them a part of our Shangri-La family.
At Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa, Maldives, local fruit and vegetable farmers supply the resort with fresh produce on a weekly basis as part of the group-wide Rooted in Nature initiative. The resort’s culinary and purchasing teams have developed a successful business relationship with the farmers, which has created a co-operative society to better coordinate their production.
In December 2012, Padmanabhan Murari, the resort's sous chef, held a cooking demonstration on Meedhoo island to showcase dishes using fruits and vegetables grown by the island’s farmers. This and future demonstrations will hopefully increase the popularity of these “non-traditional” foods in local households, allowing the farmers to expand their market base.
Guests also have the opportunity to experience different aspects of the Addu communities. As part of our work with the Farmer’s Co-operative, we lead guests on tours of the farms on Meedhoo, with some of the proceeds going to the co-operative for use in farming development.
