Shangri-La Group Supports Blood Drives On World Blood Donor Day
Blood is a necessary resource for planned treatments and urgent interventions, and can help patients suffering from life threatening conditions live longer and with higher qualities of life. The World Health Organization created World Blood Donor Day, June 14, to raise awareness of the need for safe blood, and to thank blood donors for their life-saving gift of blood.

In partnership with the Tainan City Police Department, Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan hosted a blood drive themed “Give Blood, Give Life.” Starting at 10 a.m. at the hotel’s main entrance, colleagues and members of the police department kicked off the event by donating blood. By the end of the day, 121 volunteers including guests and students from the National Cheng Kung University donated a total of 30,250 cubic centimeters of blood. The blood was safely transferred to the local Blood Donation Centre.
“Based on the figures from past summers, as the peak season of summer vacation travel hits, blood donation volume tends to drop with blood in short supply,” said Doris Pu, communications manager at Shangri-La’s Far Eastern Plaza Hotel, Tainan. “We hope to help the Blood Donation Centre increases its blood bank inventory and encourage more people to donate regularly. During emergencies, a bag of donated blood can save a life.”
“Together with the hotel staff, many students from the neighboring National Cheng Kung University were attracted to participate, donating their first bag of blood ever,” continued Pu. “Many of the hotel room guests and dining guests also took the opportunity to donate their blood to spread the love. They all said that the event was very meaningful, and they will participate in more blood donation campaign in the future.”
Shangri-La’s Tanjung Aru Resort & Spa, Kota Kinabalu collected 68 pints of blood at its blood drive. Likas Hospital collected the donated blood, which will be used to aid patients affected by Thalassemia, a genetic blood disorder that causes an inadequate amount of hemoglobin, a protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The disorder results in large numbers of destroyed red blood cells, which can lead to anemia. Sabah state has the most Thalassemia carriers in Malaysia, and affected patients in Sabah require more blood transfusions than any other state.
Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta hosted a blood drive in partnership with Palang Merah Indonesia (PMI) – The Indonesian Red Cross Society. Ninety-five employees donated over 30,000 cubic centimeters of blood.
Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya hosted a blood donation in its Paradise Ballroom for colleagues and guests. After three hours, 30 participants donated 24 pints of blood, which was donated to The Indonesian Red Cross Society blood transfusion unit in Surabaya.
In partnership with the Department of Health Philippine Blood Center, Hotel Jen Manila hosted complimentary health screenings and a blood drive. Twenty-nine colleagues from different departments donated over 500 cubic centimeters of blood. Colleagues who donated blood were rewarded with light refreshments of rice pudding and pastries.
Hotel Jen Puteri Harbour, Johor organized an on-property blood drive in partnership with the KPJ Johor Specialist Hospital. Over 41 pints of blood were collected.
China World Trade Centre organized a blood drive for 36 colleagues. A food and beverage colleague from Hotel Jen Beijing donated for the 10th time.
Eight colleagues from China World Summit Wing, Beijing participated in a local blood drive.
To commemorate World Blood Donor Day, the Community Office of Hefei, China hosted the Blood Donation Award Conference. During the event, Shangri-La Hotel, Hefei received the Outstanding Organization for Public Blood Donation award for its successful blood drives and contributions.
“This year, we have helped organize blood drives in our community and encouraged colleagues and community members to donate blood,” said Alisa Liu, director of human resources at Shangri-La Hotel, Hefei.
