Shangri-La Group Celebrates Earth Day
Since 1970, millions of people around the world have celebrated Earth Day on April 22 to raise awareness for biodiversity protection and the importance of protecting the planet we call home. Now a global movement, more than one billion people in 192 countries take part in the meaningful observation.
From coral planting activities to art installations featuring upcycled materials, check out how Shangri-La and sister-brand properties around the world participated in Earth Day 2019.
In partnership with gogoodgoods, China World Summit Wing, Beijing hosted a painting workshop for 10 families. Local artist Yuan Beibei taught the participants how to paint "Little Me and Big You," which represents family and being an integral part of a healthy environment.
"This Earth Day painting event, with the children’s involvement in protecting the Earth, will help make the future of the planet better," said Nora Li, director of communications at China World Summit Wing, Beijing.
“They are all proud of the clean and beautiful West Lake,” said Ruby Xu, director of communications at Midtown Shangri-La, Hangzhou.
Colleagues at Shangri-La’s Sanya Resort & Spa, Hainan Island organized an environmental cleanup at the Port of Tielu mangrove wetlands.
“In two hours, the volunteers practiced their environmental responsibilities with practical action,” said Patricia Xu, executive assistant at the resort. “We hope that through this activity, more people will pay attention to environmental protection and raise awareness about the effects of plastic on the environment.”
Jing An Shangri-La, West Shanghai partnered with National Geographic and other notable organizations to host the Plastic or Planet Earth Day Run in Shanghai Daning Garden. The event raised awareness about the threat that plastic and excess garbage has on the planet, and to reduce single-use plastic that enters the world's oceans.
Shangri-La Hotel, Shenyang served vegetarian dishes in the Colleagues’ Restaurant to promote healthy lifestyles and food options that have a smaller impact on the environment than other food production industries. Colleagues enjoyed delicious dishes including vegetarian “Sweet and Sour Pork” made of mushrooms in place of pork, spinach noodles and more.
Shangri-La Hotel, Suzhou encouraged guests and colleagues to write wishes for environmental protection and place them on the Wishing Tree. Participants were rewarded with homemade cookies as a thank you for their positivity.
On April 17, Shangri-La Hotel, Tianjin hosted a Fun Sports Competition featuring educational games about recycling and environmental protection. Participants were required to classify garbage between waste and different types of recycled material.
"In this way, we can better publicize the concept of garbage classification and protect the earth together," said Cecilia Wang, training manager at Shangri-La Hotel, Tianjin.
On April 22 and 23, 30 colleagues from Shangri-La Hotel, Tianjin participated in a clothing and book charity drive. The project accumulated over 300 kilograms of donated items, which will be donated to non-profit organizations. As a token of appreciation, colleagues who donated items received a succulent to take home.
Shangri-La Hotel, Wuhan hosted an educational Q&A session about environmental protection and reducing one's carbon footprint. After the Q&A, the hotel invited young guests to decorate tote bags made from recycled bed sheets.
Shangri-La Hotel, Xian raised awareness about sustainable living by encouraging followers to reduce their carbon footprint and choose walking over using transportation. Participants shared their daily step count with the hotel on WeChat. Those who submitted screenshots with over 10,000 steps in one day were entered into a raffle to win health club vouchers.
Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya invited 26 fifth-grade students from the MI Nurul Huda 1 School, the hotel’s Embrace beneficiary, to learn about the environment at the Environmental Education Centre, PPLH Seloliman, Trawas Mojokerto.
The center hosted interactive and educational activities about nature, global warming, bio indications of pollution and applications in the field, and observations of forests and rivers. The day ended with a tree planting activity, where students planted native trees such as kluwek, bendo, jambi and wringin.
“I understand now what global warming means after learning from the PPLH,” said Reyhan, one of the students.
Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta hosted an Earth Day festival with nine eco-conscious organizations in Indonesia, including WWF Indonesia, ION Water, Earth Hour Jakarta, Indonesia Berkebun, Climate Rangers, Gerakan Energi Terbarukan PLN and more. Guests enjoyed interacting with the different organizations and participated in a yoga session.
In the evening, colleagues and guests illuminated the Earth Day symbol with 220 recycled glass bottles filled with candles.
Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta continued Earth Day celebrations with a Mini Talk Show with WWF Indonesia. Lukas Adhyakso, conservative director of WWF Indonesia, discussed the state of our earth and oceans and how humans can minimize negative impacts on the environment including carbon footprint, pollution soil erosion, food waste, threats to natural resources and endangered wildlife, and more.
After the discussion, Shangri-La Hotel, Jakarta hosted a viewing session of "Save Our Species," a Netflix X WWF documentary series about environmentalism and climate concerns.
Shangri-La’s Rasa Sayang Resort & Spa, Penang and Golden Sands Resort, Penang launched the Marine Plastic Exhibition at the Eco Centre to raise awareness about the effects of plastic on the environment. Made in partnership with the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies Universiti Sains Malaysia (CEMAC USM) and local artists, the interactive exhibition demonstrates the concept of upcycling.
Led by artist Tan Kay Heong, the exhibition features artwork and educational installations made from discarded items including cigarette butts, food wrappers, plastic straws, cake boards, Styrofoam, stickers and more. As much as 80 percent of each art installation is made with upcycled materials.
“This exhibition will inspire visitors by introducing creativity to reuse waste through upcycling and other methods beyond the conventional recycling,” said Suleiman Tunku Abdul Rahman, director of communications at the resorts.
Shangri-La’s Villingili Resort & Spa, Maldives invited eight students and five teachers from the Shamsudeen School and two volunteers from the local NGO Nala Fehi Medhoo to participate in an environmental lecture at the resort’s Eco Centre. After the lecture, participants planted 16 staghorn coral in the resort’s coral nursery.
“Protecting the reefs, helping the corals regrow and building new reefs is a major part of the work of our Eco Centre team,” said Jynkee Shaine Camacho, corporate social responsibility and sustainability manager at the hotel.
“We believe that reef conservation will play a big role in helping the reef become healthy and sustain into the future,” continued Camacho.
Shangri-La's Boracay Resort & Spa, Philippines organized a series of events, starting with a morning beach cleanup. Two teams visited Banygan Beach and Punta Bunga Beach, gathering a total of 60.5 kilograms of waste. The teams also cleaned the roads leading to the beaches, where they collected another 20 kilograms of waste.
Later that morning, 23 colleagues planted mint, tarragon, sweet basil, onion chives and more at the Chef's Herb Garden.
In the afternoon, colleagues and guests participated in a golf activity on the beach. Guests enjoyed teeing off into the beautiful cerulean waters of Boracay with bio-degradable golf balls.
"This celebration reminded us that recreational activities can be both fun and responsible at the same time," said Crisanta Danan, . "We can enjoy ourselves while taking care of our environment!"
On April 14, 31 colleagues from Edsa Shangri-La, Manila participated in the 10th annual Nat Geo Earth Day Run to promote environmental protection and raise awareness about the global plastic crisis. All runners were encouraged to use reusable water bottles, which were included in the race kit.
"The ultimate goal of the Planet or Plastic campaign is to prevent one billion plastic items from reaching the ocean," said Pauline Rica De Leon, secretary to the resident manager at the hotel. "Doing so will not only protect millions of marine animals that become tangled in, smothered by or ingest plastic each year, but will also contribute to the overall health of the planet's marine ecosystems and all who rely on them."
Hotel Jen Orchardgateway Singapore raised awareness about biodiversity protection by presenting videos during meals in the colleague canteen. The videos featured tips on how to live sustainably, as well as provided information about the hotel's Secret Garden, which converts waste to fertilizer for an on-property herb garden. Beyond raising awareness, the hotel collected gently worn shoes and donated them to Soles4Souls, a non-profit organization that provides shoes to underprivileged communities.
Colleagues at Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore organized a tree planting activity.
"Our colleagues were very delighted to raise awareness about oxygen impact that we get from trees," said RB Puno, learning and development manager at Hotel Jen Tanglin Singapore. "It's not just on Earth Day that we have to protect Mother Earth, but everyday. Let us strive to make a difference and build a world that take great care of the earth.”
