Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo Hosts Sustainable Food And Beverage Panel For World Food Day
Every year on October 16, World Food Day raises awareness of poverty and hunger. On October 28, Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo observed World Food Day in partnership with Biodiversity Sri Lanka (BSL) by hosting a discussion panel about sustainable food and beverage practices. With the theme “Rooted in Nature,” the panel invited representatives from local sustainable food production, food security, and food management organizations to discuss sustainable lifestyles, working with sustainable partners and share information about best business practices. Representatives from local businesses attended the panel to learn from their expertise.
“Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo hosted this event due to our shared values of sustainable food and beverage practices between Rooted in Nature and BSL,” said Timothy Wright, general manager of the hotel. “The panel provided great information about sustainable practices, including information about the group-wide Rooted in Nature program, which is based on local, healthy and organic ingredients that are sourced from fishermen and farmers who operate sustainable businesses. By 2020, the Shangri-La Group has a goal to serve 75% more sustainably sourced food on every hotel menu.”
The discussions also explored global and local food and beverage trends, as well as strategies to minimize food waste in the hospitality industry. From these discussions, BSL will share its best practices that are already in the industry so the organizations can apply the practices to their own sustainable operations.
The panel ended with an inspiring and thoughtful conclusion by Ms. Harshini de Silva Pandithasekera, general manager of BSL, stressing the importance of Sri Lanka’s involvement in conservation and sustainability. After the event, all attendees enjoyed delicious Rooted in Nature refreshments.
Congratulations to Shangri-La Hotel, Colombo for supporting sustainable food and beverage progress in Sri Lanka!
