On October 7, colleagues from Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya observed International Deaf Day by joining in a community-wide celebration in the city square. With the theme “With Sign Language, Everyone is Included,” the event welcomed over 125 participants for a fun walk and run, music and dance performances, and Bisindo (Indonesian Sign Language) lessons.

The seminar invited 70 children affected by cerebral palsy, their parents, 30 teachers from elementary schools in the area, students from local schools and Shangri-La colleagues to learn about constructive ways to interact with children with cerebral palsy."

“This is the first time we have cooperated with Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya,” said Diah Anggraeny, chairman of YPCP Surabaya, during the seminar. “We have not held an activity as exciting as today. We encourage all parties to join this social activity in hopes of driving awareness of cerebral palsy, how children with cerebral palsy can interact and hold roles in life and society, and how the general public can better understand the growth and development of children with cerebral palsy.”

The seminar included lively performances from children from the Blind Education Foundation and Rafael, an adult in the community who is affected by cerebral palsy.

“These performances proved that amazing abilities can outshine any disability,” said Fajar Mulya, executive communications manager at Shangri-La Hotel, Surabaya.

Following the seminar, colleagues hosted a fun art session and cupcake decorating activity with the families.

The day concluded with hand-washing practice, a short quiz, and handing out gifts to the students who attended the training.
